Script Frenzy and Script Frenzy Young Writers Program are both projects of the Office of Letters and Light. We're a tiny 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Oakland, CA with an oversized mission to help kids and adults discover their creative potential.
Our events, such as Script Frenzy and National Novel Writing Month, are free, and financed almost entirely through donations from participants. Ready to help? Here's how!
Four Ways to Support Script Frenzy
1) Make a tax-deductible donation through our online Donation Station. If every Script Frenzy participant donates just $10, we'll be able to pay all our bills for the main program and the Young Writers Program. Yep: the price of a movie ticket covers a whole month of scriptwriting fun for over 10,000 people.

2) Buy a Script Frenzy t-shirt, hat, or mug in the
Script Frenzy online store.
Proceeds go directly to our programs!
3) Use Goodsearch.com. This Yahoo-powered search engine donates a penny to the charity of your choice for every search you do. Before you start searching just put "The Office of Letters and Light" in the "Who do you Goodsearch for?" box. That will lock in Script Frenzy's parent nonprofit as the recipient of all your searches from that point forward.
Goodsearch also offers an installable toolbar to let you search directly from your browser. There are versions for users with Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari. You can download and learn more about the toolbar here, and you can go here to troubleshoot.
This costs nothing, and if every Script Frenzy participant switched to Goodsearch for April, we could pay for much of our Young Writers Program through Goodsearch funds alone.
4) Spread the word about Script Frenzy! Our mission is to get people of all ages writing! Know someone who needs a creative kick in the pants? Challenge them to write a script with us in April!
Where Your Script Frenzy Donations Go
In 2008, the expenses for Script Frenzy and the Young Writers Program totaled at almost $100,000. For a complete breakdown of those expenses, please peruse our 2008 budget (PDF).
In the Script Frenzy main program, your donation gives aspiring writers…
- Membership to our community-based website, including a writer profile where participants can track their writerly progress, post script excerpts, and exchange FrenzyMail messages with other writers.
- Access to the Script Frenzy forums, where staff, volunteers, and fellow participants answer questions about genre, plot, character, formatting, technology, script revision and sale.
- An opportunity to join local Script Frenzy writing chapters at write-ins, kick-off parties, and wrap-parties, and receive stickers and other motivational scriptwriting goodies.
- Access to Writer's Resources section, incl. scriptwriting how-tos on structure and formatting covering screenplays, stage plays, and TV scripts.
- Weekly pep talks and other encouragement from staff and Municipal Liaisons
- Availability to participate in Script Frenzy's AlphaSmart loaner program, where technologically challenged participants can receive a laptop computer free of charge for the month of April.
- Winner certificates, web icons for those who go the 100-page distance.
- Post-event advice on revision, contests, and other ways to take the next step.
The same donation also gives participants in our Script Frenzy Young Writers Program…
- Free profile/membership to our community-based websites for young writers and educators: http://ywp.scriptfrenzy.org.
- Access to site forums that enable students to communicate with other young writers worldwide.
- Ways to communicate with other young writers around the world using FrenzyMail
- Pep talks from staff and established authors that inspire our young participants to write
- Downloadable flyers to post at schools, libraries, and community centers.
- Writing incentives such as downloadable participant icons and—at the end of each challenge—downloadable winner icons and printable certificates for participants and winners.
- Script Frenzy’s YWP website offers students free scriptwriting “How-Tos” and a month-long Scriptwriting Boot Camp with accompanying Young Scriptwriter Workbooks that teach all elements of scriptwriting and script formatting for screenplays, stage plays, TV scripts, and comic book scripts. We offer three different workbooks—one for elementary school students, one for middle school students, and one for high school students.
- Post-event advice for young authors with revision overviews and information about youth writing contests, creative writing centers, and other online creative writing events.
Finally, your donation gives teachers and educators who are leading Script Frenzy Young Writers Program classrooms…
- Access to teacher-only forums where educators can exchange encouragement, advice, and lesson plans before, during, and after each event.
- Advice on how to successfully host a month-long, deadline-driven writing event in a classroom from beginning to end. The advice has been collected from experienced teachers who have facilitated our events in their classrooms over the past four years.
- Incentive kits for their students that include event posters for their classrooms, and progress charts, buttons, stickers, and fun temporary tattoos for their young writers.
- An opportunity to participate in our YWP AlphaSmart Loaner Program. For each event, we lend up to 25 AlphaSmart Neos to participating classrooms in need of word processors. This is done completely free of charge; OLL even covers shipping.
- Teacher-only lesson plans that expand upon concepts taught to students in the Scriptwriting Boot Camps.
