Most Overrated Film of 2007 |
To me, it was There Will Be Blood. I saw the movie and I hated it. Daniel Day-Lewis ridiculously overacted, the story jumped around without taking time to develop the characters enough, and was there really a twin??
What about the rest of you? What did you find to be THE most overrated movie of last year?

RE: Most Overrated Film of 2007 |
Stand back folks, I'm about to get lynch mobbed.
Juno.
...
Okay, maybe not THE most overrated. But it's up there for me. I mean, it had its great parts - snatches of dialogue were witty, great handling of the subject, FINALLY the girl not only actually seriously considers abortion but also goes through and gives the baby away instead of keeping it at a change of heart. Oh, and the acting was pretty darn good too. Mostly.
But most of the script was not actually anything spectacular. And parts were downright painful. I don't get why it was so praised - yes, it had its moments, but a lot of the "slang" used to make Juno look like an "average teen" was just flinch-worthy. I almost stopped watching during the early scene in the store between Juno and the attendant. SO overdone. And the discussions on various music/bands was kind of cheesy and cliche.
Like I said, it was a pretty good movie, and I enjoyed it for the most part. But the extreme adoration some people are giving it? Sorry, no. That's why I consider it overrated.

Edit: Oh, and I hated the music. Didn't work at all, sorry.

Well, Master Radishes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if they are wrong. :-) Just kidding... I personally loved Juno although I agree with you about the soundtrack. At times it was a little distracting.
Another overrated film of 2007...The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It was an ok movie, but very long and quite boring at times. The performances were pretty decent, but I think the critics were wrong about Casey Affleck. His best role of the year was in Gone Baby Gone, not as Robert Ford.

RE: Most Overrated Film of 2007 |
In my opinion, Sweeney Todd wasn't worth it. In true Burton style, it was beautifully filmed, lit, costumed, and designed. The orchestra also sounded very good. Unfortunately, the performances (yes, including Depp) were all below the caliber of what those characters should be. Too much of the original music was cut, and Burton either didn't get or didn't want the audience to get some of the best jokes in the script. Helena's singing was pretty, but completely disconnected from her character.
And everyone was suddenly like, "Oh my God! Sweeney Todd! That's, like, my favorite musical EVER!" when the movie was basically a mostly cut, bloody, well-lit bastard of the original musical. Oh well.

Heh. I enjoyed Sweeney Todd, but I'd never seen the musical before, and having found some of the original soundtrack I'm starting to suspect I agree with the Broadway fans. "A Little Priest" was fun enough in the film, but they cut a lot of the middle bits where they're prancing around trying to find rhymes for all the different professions, and I really love those bits now.
Alan Rickman singing was also kind of terrifying. Not bad, exactly, but... there was something subtly wrong about the entire idea. Final analysis: It was fun, but I would probably enjoy the stage version a lot more.

Agreed. When it was nominated for Best Original Screenplay (and won!), I sat there thinking WTF??? Was this *that* lousy a year for screenplays?
And if you havent seen the YouTube parody of the woman who wrote it, do so: it's terrifyingly bang on.

A lot of the cuts didnt make sense -- they could have whacked half of JOANNA out and not missed a beat, but cutting THE BALLAD OF SWEENEY TODD is unforgivable.
:: sigh :: Sondheim just doesnt have a lot of luck with film transfers, I must say. FORUM was appalling. This was mediocre. NIGHT MUSIC -- :: shivers ::.

RE: Most Overrated Film of 2007 |
Atonement, anyone? I really wasn't that into it at all.
Don't get me wrong, I though it looked stunning and there were some amazing sequences - the Dunkirk beach shot, for example - and I understand Wright was going for a certain kind of acting etc., fine, I was just very surprised all the critics went quite so crazy for it. The thing added up to less than the sum of its parts, for me. It all felt a bit disjointed and soulless.
Maybe I'm missing some fantastically subtle point, I don't know, but I got very little out of it and left the cinema feeling pretty hollow.
