Actually, to be honest, I was going to see how FEW explosions I could get away with. I think that people who think action movies are dumb always bring up the explosions.
I'm thinking back to some of my favorite action images. In Die Hard where Bruce Willis ties a firehouse around his waist and jumps off the building to escape an explosion - THAT was a good use of an explosion because it wasn't ABOUT the explosion.
I saw an old movie once -- I think it was "Lives of a Bengal Lancer" -- a brick building was blown up, but what I found fascinating was that the explosive blast didn't dominate the shot - it was the building flying apart into rubble. I just thought that was cool.
