Animation - Storyboards As Script?

Aside from writing, animation is my passion, and an idea crossed my mind. Though it's true that some animated series have actual scripts, the traditional method of scripting animation still remains storyboarding. Since animation is a visual medium, I'm thinking about storyboarding in place of the traditional script. Does anyone think this could be considered "cheating" in a sense, or does it seem logical since I'm interested in animation? Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions are appreciated. :)

RE: Animation - Storyboards As Script?

Hi Nyachu,

I wouldn't consider it cheating, since drawing a storyboard is much much much more work than writing a teleplay. It's much easier to write "She walks out the door." than it is to draw someone walking out of the door, which requires 2 or 3 storyboard panels.

I'm writing an animated feature myself, and I'm doing a full script first. My later drafts will probably be storyboards. Most television animation is done script first.

RE: Animation - Storyboards As Script?

Thanks for the response. :)

That's what I was thinking too (about the cheating), especially since before most animated series used scripts, scripts weren't even used in animation (the ones that were more gag-driven). I guess I was kind of thinking of that, but I also want to adapt a short story of mine into a comic script this year, so maybe by the time I finish that, I might rather write a script instead of jumping straight into storyboards. I suppose I'll just see what I feel like. Thanks for your thoughts, and good luck on writing your feature!
