When it comes to block, and when time and word count are more important than serious content, always remember this excellent phrase:

You can always edit out the tangent later. I've used it in NANO. You get stuck a few days, go off somewhere else, then come back when your brain unsticks. You might even find you can work the tangent into your writing. We've all likely read something, or seen a film, where some apparently random, odd things go on. Then, at the end, it all ties together. Perhaps this is even how that comes about.
