Celtx losing pages!

It's a good thing I cut-n-paste everything to a text doc as a safety, because even though every time I do a "save as" and give the project a new name (frenzy-6-b for the second time saving yesterday), I open it up the next time, and I'm missing some of the last parts of what I wrote! Even though I save all the time! So I have to import things from my backup text file, which just wrong.

(I have version 0.9.9.7, and am using the stageplay formatting, and nothing fancy at all.)

help?

RE: Celtx losing pages!

I use the StagePlay format, and haven't had a problem saving - Are you on Win, Linux or Mac?

It does seem to get a bit confused with copy/paste losing the formatting, and I've had stuff disappear when pasting and then trying to reformat it, but it does that right in front of you. They are fixing this.

There is (maybe was) a bug where if the save failed, it didn't tell you (for example if the file was read-only), so it might be an idea to see if it is actually saving (and make sure you are actually saving to where you thought you were) by looking at the Last Updated date

RE: Celtx losing pages!

I had a weird glitch yesterday where it said I was on page 18 but you could clearly see page 18 "went on forever." I closed it and re-opened and it looked the same.

I hopped on-line and uploaded it to celtx.com (Project Central) and when I looked back at my Celtx window, "voila!" It was on page 23.

Odd, don't know what to say about that but maybe uploading it would help you, too? At least it's an alternate backup.

I also save to a thumb drive and every few days e-mail myself a copy.

RE: Celtx losing pages!

I've lost 4 pages in total because of celtx. I'm going to start backing stuff up and gonna see if there is a newer version or something because the whole thing is quite glitchy.

RE: Celtx losing pages!

Eep. I haven't had this problem so far but thanks for the heads-up, I think I'll start saving in different formats as back-ups! Cheers and I hope this gets resolved for you guys.

RE: Celtx losing pages!

Me too, same version and formatting, running on Win XP. It freezes at odd times, but I think I've sorted that one out. But this page-dropping thing is killing me. I click 'save' every 5 minutes, and I still lose hours of work; it's happened to me 3 days running. Only way I can tell if the save is working is to close and re-open -- a pretty adventurous way to do it. Of course I back up to Word, but why should I have to?

Thus far, my leading hypothesis is that CeltX may one day be a good program, but it's presently a script-devouring crapmonster that sensible people abandon in favor of Word. I'm open to alternative hypotheses, if anybody's got one.

It's a shame, because the automated formatting features are very handy. But automatically formatting the work that it will then automatically refuse to save, even when I repeatedly click the 'save' button, well...what am I supposed to do, memorize it?

In other words, despite the claim that CeltX is free, it's not -- so far it has cost me about 4 extra hours of work recreating things I've already done. So my question is, does the CeltX business model depend on using ScriptFrenzy writers as unpaid beta-testers, or is that just an accident?

RE: Celtx losing pages!

One thing that you can do is set Celtx to autosave every five minutes. In Mac, its under preferences, but in PC, i think it is under options. This way, there is a slightly better chance that things won't die on you. Also, I'd just paste to a txt file every vew minutes, though it is a pain!

RE: Celtx losing pages!

I have a problem of different sort. But it still has to do with a difference in page numbers.

after typing for a while I will click on the "type set" tab and it takes me to a display with a number of pages (currently says 25 which includes the title page), but when I click on File=>Print Preview, the page opens and says there are 29 pages ready to be printed.

Which one is correct without wasting paper and toner in printing them out.

Yes I'm using version 0.9.9.7 on an XP laptop and desktop at home.

RE: Celtx losing pages!

I have the page number problem as well. I find that when I type it won't put in page breaks, even though I have pagination turned on. All the type will just pile up on one long page. The only way I can correct is to turn pagination off and then back on. Then the program seems to right itself and give me all the correct page breaks. Kind of a pain, but at least it works.

RE: Celtx losing pages!

Today I lost scene 2. I discovered if you delete one of the cards, the corresponding scene will also be deleted. Anyone know how to recover it? As soon as I deleted the card (it didn't have any words so I thought it was an "extra), I hit Save, and went back to the script. Too late to undo.

RE: Celtx losing pages!

well I'm not going to make the Frenzy this year.

The weekend of the 11th I had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the software on my main computer. I kept working occasionally on the laptop but not much.

After that I did not work on the script for nearly two weeks, but now I can't get Celtx to save my document properly. The last time I saved it was the 15th and I had a page count of 49 pages. I opened the file and was surprised to see only 42 pages, so I downloaded the copy I had saved on-line. Again only 42 pages. I worked for about 2 hours and recreated all the pages that were missing and then moved on so that I had nearly 60 pages of text finished when I started to get cramps in my hands.

I saved to the computer and saved on-line and now today I open the program and it says I only have a page count of 45. 90 minutes worth of work just disappeared.

I'm about to throw this damn program out the window, and just do the damn thing by hand.
