Typewriters

Just wondering if anyone else is using a typewriter for Script Frenzy? There was quite a group of us during Nano, but I have no idea if any of those folks have switched over to scripts this month.

My typewriter is a red duotone Royal portable, from around 1930. His name is Marvin. Here's a picture, not the best, but it gives the idea:

If anyone *is* doing Screnzy old school, do post photos. Show off your babies. :)

RE: Typewriters

You are a glutton for punishment! I still type some things occasionally (letters, forms, personal lists, etc.), but a script? Editing must be hell for you!

RE: Typewriters

Yes, you are a glutton for punishment! When I discovered word processors almost exactly a decade ago, I never went back to typewriters again. That's because, even as fast as I type, there always comes a time when I make a mistake: hitting the wrong key, typing the wrong quote, skipping something I planned to write but didn't -- these were the times I hated, because with the manual typewriters I used to use (I could never afford an electric), I ended up having to retype the whole thing, sometimes several pages at a time, just to get the damn manuscript the way I wanted it. Editing was indeed hell for me. So when I got that old IBM PS/2 with Word for Windows 2 on it, I said good riddance to my typewriters and have never touched one again.

But if you can pull this off with an old manual typewriter, I'll admire you greatly. ;)

BTW, I learned to type on an IBM Selectric. That was what my high school used for typing classes back in the early 1980s. Back then, computers were for programming and games.

RE: Typewriters

I have an old folding Smith Corona No3 dating from 1926.

I haven't used it for Screnzy this year but I do write poetry on it. I find it easier than using a word processor for short stuff. Wonderful machine.

RE: Typewriters

I have a 1950's Smith-Corona Silent-Super. My baby that I love.

I won't be doing Screnzy or NaNo on it, but I use it for a lot of other things, like homework and random musings.

I find that the rhythm and the sound helps me to write--the other night, I had writers block until I sat down at the typewriter. Ended up with a love letter to mine typewriter, which I will post at a later time and date. Thank the gods for typewriters.

RE: Typewriters

I live on a small, remote, tropical island. We have been having serious power problems-our local power company has old and poorly maintained generators that have been going down daily, so we have two hour load shedding, rotating around the island. The latest news is that all power may cease as of tomorrow because the power company doesn't have the money to buy fuel.

Manual Royal--do you have an extra typewriter I can borrow? Just ship to me in Saipan, MP 96950. The people at the post-office know me. Hurry. I'm only half way through my script.

:-)

Writer's cramp is the alternative. I know you wouldn't want me to suffer!!

(But perhaps you should wait a day or two, just in case this is all an idle threat. I can only hope.)

RE: Typewriters

In 1976 I wrote a book on an sturdy old manual Royal, with round glass-covered keys. Great machine. Lost when burglars burnt my place down in 1986; that's when I took up word processing and haven't gone back. I miss the sound of the keys and the ding! of the bell at the end of each line.

RE: Typewriters

The ding of the bell is almost better than the pretty word count/page count progress bars!

Our power is still on for now, so no need to send manual typewriter just yet.

RE: Typewriters

This is just a shoutout of thanks to my typewriter. I couldn't make much progress on my script, and with it, I made probably 25 pages in the last day or so. Thanks yOU!
