Revision Deadline::: June 30, 2008

Hi all, I **hope** I am posting this correctly...I plan to have my final draft done by June 30th. The April frenzy really helped me to jump start...anyone else in..

RE: Revision Deadline::: June 30, 2008

I've been madly trying to revise in the past week, though not in the way they're suggesting in the newsletter. I generally work better with deadlines (provided I keep them), so I hope to have a copy decent enough to let my sister read by Sat. June 7th. I'd like to fix up any suggestions she has by the following Saturday, June 14th, but we'll see how it goes. When that's done I might submit it to Script Swap, but again we'll see. Eventually I want a rough audio read-through using my sister and I as the voice actors to record onto my computer, but I'll set a date for that when I have a better idea of how everything else is going.

There, now that I've put my schedule out there, hopefully I'll actually keep it. :P

RE: Revision Deadline::: June 30, 2008

I think I'll join you on that deadline. My main problem right now is deciding how I want the story to go. When I started writing, it was a movie, but now it's turned into the first episode of a tv show. Except it's the entire backstory of the characters... so now I'm torn on keeping the backstory as the first episode, then skipping ahead in time for the next episode (next Screnzy!), or re-writing ENTIRELY and just keeping the backstory to poke in here and there. GAAAH.

RE: Revision Deadline::: June 30, 2008

If I might put in my 2 cents worth, Zumie...

Showing the backstory in the pilot episode and then jumping ahead to the present day in the next generally doesn't work for TV shows. It mostly confuses the audience because they are introduced to one plot/setting/set of characters and then suddenly told "oh by the way, you'll be watching these people over here now". I would try to weave the backstory into the episodes, maybe through separated flashbacks (like Psych, if you've ever seen that) or dialogue. Or maybe throw the backstory in in a later episode.

But that's just me. :P There I go, being all critical again. If you can make an episode of backstory work, more props to you! Don't give it up just 'cuz I said so. Play around with it and see what works.

RE: Revision Deadline::: June 30, 2008

Yep. I've joined a playwrights/directors lab at one of our local theatre companies, and there's a not-half-bad possibility that I can get this piece up on stage for a staged reading if I can finish revisions (my own self-imposed, plus lots of good revision ideas from the other members of the lab) by June 30. So failure isn't really an option, yanno? :-)

RE: Revision Deadline::: June 30, 2008

I think the best thing to do is set a page quota much like i did when i was writing...of course revising/editing isn't as straight forward..

ALthough its more work, I think its better to rewrite rather than cut, paste, and revise I often find a lot of enhancements come out when i am rewriting parts that i thought were 'ok'.

RE: Revision Deadline::: June 30, 2008

Yeah, I kind of figured that I was going to end up doing that... main problem being I have to come up with pretty much all new stuff. :P Ah well, let's see if I can do that.

RE: Revision Deadline::: June 30, 2008

I'm in for that date. My original goal was simply to have a draft to show my friend when school starts back up in the fall, but I think having an actual date would be beneficial for me. I'm planning on printing off my script at work this week. I know I have a lot of work ahead of me since I have to rework one character and might be getting rid of another, but I'm up to the challenge.

I'm in. :)
At least I should be able to take a good second look at my script until this date. Can't believe that I haven't managed to do it until now. *sighs*

RE: Revision Deadline::: June 30, 2008

I'm definitely in! In fact, I planned this anyway!

I've had my month away from the script. I attempted MayNoWriMo only to fall to a nasty case of writer's block which just ended only a day and a half ago. I have my printed script, already largely marked up with the red pen and ready for more. I have a pile of unused index cards and some story ideas I left out. I have a load of frustration and the desire to take it out on my script. I have that annoying BBC script template for Word; I have Celtx too, but I'll have to check to see if they have any comics templates yet. I have a huge pile of scratch paper waiting for me to do my thumbnail layouts on it. I have some drawing self-instruction to do, and some character designs left undone (or, in Leila's case, unclothed). I have my superior ability to write a script, at least superior to my ability to write a novel.

You bet I'm ready for the rewrite! I'm starting it tomorrow. While I'm at it, I'm resuming the rewrite for my '07 NaNoWriMo novel, Bad Company. I'm finishing both the script and novel rewrites this month.

RE: Revision Deadline::: June 30, 2008

Continuing from last post...

I've taken out the printout of my script, already marked up with the red pen (for relocating scenes). I'm not going to start rewriting on the computer yet. I'm starting with page layouts, since the first several pages of my manga are montages, right up to the double title page. Then I'll bring out the index cards and write character, event, gadget, and background cards. The story will likely change greatly even if the plot outline doesn't change much at all (except for those relocated scenes, of course); for one thing, I'm doing some world building to deepen the story. When I start rewriting, I'll let you know.
