How do you go about writing a song?-HELP PLEASE, any tips?

Hi There,
Do you start with the lyrics or the tune? or does it matter, and which is better?
Also, If I don't really play piano and can't read notes...is it still possible to write a song? How much harder is it? I can play this electric harp thing that i own, but i still cannot read notes HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..

i guess it's different for everyone but i'll tell you how i'm planning on doing it.

I'm not good with music so i've picked songs fom musicals which reflect the tone and structure of what i want to do. I'm going to change the lyrics as i go through the script and then when april's over i'm going to change the key drastically and experiment with new melodies. i know it's kind of cheating music wise but it's the only way it's going to sound good and not nursery rhyme-ish!

Just write the lyris for now, and don't worry about the tune. Concentrate on emotion, and let the mood of the scene guide your writing. Write way more lyrics than you'll need, it's easier to cut later than add new ones. Last but not least, just try to hear your character in your head, and the lyrics will come out of you.

Well it depends on what I'm doing.
Some times I will be humming a tune and then I write it down and add words or I start sing random words about how I feel (or how the character feels) and then add the notes later.
About not being able to read music, I'm not sure how to help you with that. I play piano and guitar. So that is the only music I write for.

It's about creating a beat that you want your song to have. A lot of times I listem to my I-pod and find things from songs I like and think I would like to have it in the melody or something. (That's what I do cuz I don't play any insterments but I can pick up beats really really fast)

Lyrics, just write out what you are thinking at the time. You just go with it and once you're done writting it go back and look it over. And sometimes you'll discover things follow better together if you add a different word or removing a work entirly.

But that's how I do it. It all about what works for you and gets the job done.
