What would you consider the best way for spoken lines to transition into a song, and back out again?

Do you prefer sudden spontaeneous singing that comes from seemingly nowhere?

Or do you like having your dialogue slowly lead up to the song, the characters singing the last few lines before breaking out into a full blown song?

I want to hear your opinions, and see what your reasons are. Still trying to decide myself.

It really depends on the scene. What I'm currently working on is the characters talking, then the music starting underneath the characters talking, then them changing from talking to singing. Character ALEC is about to explain his idea to his friends, so he then says that it's very simple... Then he starts singing.

However if a character is alone, it may work to have music start, then them start singing, or the same thing.

I'm trying to make it seem natural, so I try to not just suddenly have everyone break out in song and dance jumping over each other wildly just because someone said, "I have to go to the bathroom."

It depends also on the mood I guess. If a character is really angry, he may just suddenly burst out singing spontaneously.

If a few characters are talking, then they could just flow into a song by music playing underneath and them joining or something similar...

That's at least what I say now. I may change my mind as I continue! :D

i like to have the characters speak a few lines over the music/with he music to lead them in. I always like it when i see it done so i'm guessing it'll work with mine. But then again, if it's a big dance number i think it's better to just plunge in for the impact.

i guess it depends on the kind of song that's happening. Big emotional songs need a build up to gain pathos but a showy number needs some kind of impact, so i guess there's no real answer to your question

Depends...if its emotion have some diolouge before it. But with any song have some sort of diolouge (but not chessy or predicable) leading up to it. That's my advice

Being as it's Script Frenzy, I think you should try any and every thing you can think of. And imagine some of the people you dislike playing certain roles--give them the cheesiest thing you can come up with!!!

Well, my play already involves a misanthropic grumpy old Janitor who sings and dances with a mop. So, I don't think it can get much cheesier. It's pretty much a French Play already (Cultural joke!)

Sometimes I have the songs be about what the character is thinking so its almost like they are talking (singing) to them selves.
