An Excerpt from Love Has Legs

PEREN
No. Don't keep a journal.

MARIPOSA
Why not?

PEREN
It boxes you in. Coming home
every day to write in the same
old book makes it all routine...
generic... That's not you.

MARIPOSA
So what should I do?

PEREN
Leave pieces of yourself wherever
you go. Write in the margins of
every notebook, about whatever comes
to your mind -- the prof's stupid
tie, something funny you saw the
other day, an epiphany you had
instead of paying attention, hell,
even the weather if you have to.
Use the memo sections of every check
you write, no matter how professional
it's supposed to be. Start so many
blogs you lose track of them all --
even if it means you can't fill out
the application for Deal or No Deal
-- and let each of them capture whatever
side of yourself you find at the time.
Whatever you do, make sure that people
are still finding you years after you
die -- leave them an adventure.

MARIPOSA
So you do all those things?

PEREN
Damnit, I wish I did. The world would
be a much better place if people followed
more of their own advice.
