An Excerpt from Breaking the Looking-Glass

ESKIL
(snappishly)
I told you! You Break reality. It has to stop. The end of the world is coming!

MARINA
(interrupts)
Hold it- this sounds vaguely familiar... Have we talked about this already?

ESKIL
No! Well... maybe yes... We didn't really talk about it- you were drunk at the time.

MARINA
Oh. Yesterday, then?

Eskil nods. Marina frowns at him, and sits down on the bench next to him, sticking her hands into her trouser pockets.

ESKIL
I'm being serious.

MARINA
I'm still trying to absorb the fact that you're... a... hum... Breaker.

ESKIL
There's nothing to absorb? I don't understand what you're worrying about.

MARINA
I have never met another one that can do it! Never! In all my.. oh... sixteen years!

Eskil shrugs, and sits back on the bench, staring at the grey and overcast sky.

ESKIL
I only met one before you, and he died.

MARINA
(guiltily)
Oh... I'm sorry about that...

ESKIL
Eh. I met him just before he died. He was the one who told me the fate of Breakers.

MARINA
And what fate be that, then?

ESKIL
Sorry?

MARINA
What did he say? The old man?

ESKIL
That... ah... the fabric of reality is being torn... and now it's gotten to the point where... well... where holes are opening and things are going through. It's hard to explain.

MARINA
(deadly serious)
What?

ESKIL
I know. It sounds like a really bad episode of Buffy.

MARINA
(surprised)
What?

Eskil doesn't say anything. Marina sighs.

MARINA
I'm not going to ask how you know all this if you don't tell me how to live my life.

ESKIL
But-

MARINA
(interrupts)
I really don't care- I don't know you, you've been stalking me, and now you tell me my so-called gift is going to cause a sci-fi like Hell. I think... you were the one who had a bit too much to drink.

Marina gets up from the bench, anger in her eyes as she glares at Eskil. Eskil looks positively bewildered.

ESKIL
But-

MARINA
(interrupts)
I suggest you don't come around again. Please leave me alone.

Eskil too stands up, his demeanour suddenly a lot more menacing.

ESKIL
Marina- I know what you've done! You Break reality almost as naturally as you breathe- you're responsible for your mistakes but you keep trying to fix them all the time. Even now, with impending doom accompanying your powers, you don't seem to understand the depth of the problem! You have to STOP. You have to promise me you won't keep Breaking.

MARINA
(impatiently)
IF you promise me to get out of my life!

ESKIL
Would love to! So it's a deal?

Marina HUMPHS loudly, spins away and marches towards her home. Eskil sighs and turns away from her, staring at his car whilst shaking his head.

ESKIL
She will never do it... so I have... no choice.
