An Excerpt from The Pirate King

WE SEE a BATTLE in a villa where several PIRATES are at SWORDS with a few SOLDIERS. Victory is about to be won by the pirates as the pirate leader, TAIGER JACKS strikes away the MANOR LORD’S sword.
The Manor Lord crumbles to his knees at the point of Taiger Jacks’s sword.

MANOR LORD
I surrender! Strike and be done with me!
TAIGER JACKS
Strike and be certain never to find the papers that will give this island to me? I am not such a fool. Where are they?
The Manor Lord reaches into his waistcoat and produces a document in a leather folder.

MANOR LORD
Take it. Please, with my blessings and spare me!
Taiger Jacks takes the papers with one hand while holding the sword point upon the man.

TAIGER JACKS
On your person? A ship load of pirates comes to conquer your little paradise, and you put your most valuable possession in your pocket where it is sure to be found when your body is rifled.
(Opens and looks at the document, then has an amusing realization)
Oh, you thought you were going to get away.
The FIGHTING HAS CEASED with the foot-soldiers dead and the pirates picking their bodies clean of jewelry, wallets, coins and whatever else is interesting to them.

The Manor Lord slips his hand under his jacket and PRODUCES A FLINTLOCK PISTOL, points it at Taiger Jacks and pulls the trigger as he speaks.
MANOR LORD
Die!
A shot rings out; the manor lord falls. Behind him is seen DEVLIN FALSTRY, who salutes Jacks with his gun.

TAIGER JACKS
At my back yet again, Devlin, I thank you.
DEVLIN FALSTRY
Aye Taiger, what sort of friend would I be otherwise?
TAIGER JACKS
(To the corpse)
Except for that, you might have lived.
(Holds up landowner’s deed)
It is ours! We have come home boys!
There is much cheering and dragging away of bodies.

BENJAMIN
Captain we be grateful to ye. It has been a long time and a nasty storm to come full circle. But it is finally done.
TAIGER JACKS
Aye, Benjamin. This is when revenge is sweet, to reclaim our homes and our lives at last.
BENJAMIN
Aye Captain, the men’ll be searchin’ for their families now if any still be livin’.
TAIGER JACKS
They are free to go and do so, Benjamin. Let them know that each one is now free to do as he pleases.
(Holds deed out to Benjamin)
Here. What would you have me do with this? Our king is dead and the one who signed this no longer has the authority to give this isle away.

BENJAMIN
Keep it. It belongs ta ye now, Captain.

(Taiger Jacks holds the paper out towards Devlin Falstry. Devlin responds by raising his hands and taking a step back.)

DEVLIN FALSTRY
No, the land and the responsibility is yours now, my friend. You may be ready to leave the sea but the leadership will be yours time unending, I’m afraid.
(Laughs good naturedly)
I’d say you have become king now, Taiger, not just a captain anymore.
(Bows low and slow to his friend)
The men about them now cheer in agreement and a crown is made from some of the things they have gathered. This is placed upon Taiger Jack’s head in ceremony. There is much celebrating.

TAIGER JACKS
(As the celebration goes on, he calls Benjamin and Devlin to him)
So if I am to be king, I have one last trip to make. I would like you to come with me.
