INT. - MASON'S HOUSE
Xakk's POV

Footsteps are heard coming from the living room.

MASON (O.S.)
(to herself)
Hm... very nice. Not falling apart,
at any rate... suppose it could use
a little work... and Xakk, you can
come off of the ceiling now.

XAKK is taken off of the ceiling and floats into the living
room, where MASON stands with her hand outstretched. She
sets him down.

MASON
Don't look so surprised, Zachary.
You're not the only one in this
city who's got powers, although I
doubt they're the same as mine.

XAKK
It's Xakk. Not Zachary. 'Sides, I
know more 'bout you than you think.
I had hidden back there in the
kitchen, when I had a vision of you
talking on the phone here. You're
gonna get the house. 'Course, if
you're a mind-reader too -

MASON
I'm not.
(pause)
You know one then?

XAKK
Yes. She's one of the ones I was
hiding from.

MASON
(worriedly)
Is she out to get you?

XAKK
No, she's one of my friends. Don't
ask why I hid.

MASON
Wait... is she a shapeshifter too?

XAKK
Mhm, only birds though. Aaron can
become any animal.

MASON
Would they happen to take the form
of hawks?

XAKK
Yeah. (blushes) I'm not used to
talking this much to strangers. Can
I trust you?

MASON
Well, you know I have powers, and I
know you do. If either of us were
to betray the other to Central...
it wouldn't benefit either of us.

XAKK
Fair enough.

MASON
I think your friends are in the
alleys now. That's one of my
powers, actually; I can sense
others within a certain range. Of
course, I am telekinetic too.

XAKK
How many others have you met?

MASON
In person - you. Many of the street
rats are, though. Never bothered to
talk to them, because I know they
won't trust me.

XAKK
Can see why. World's not exactly
receptive to us 'freaks.'

MASON
(snorts)
Have you seen the newspapers
lately? They're calling for the
'immediate removal' of all of us to
a 'secure facility.' It's the
Moonlight Project.

XAKK
They want to experiment on us.

MASON
Exactly. I thought they had learned
their lesson with the Rebellion ten
years ago.

XAKK
'Parently not. I guess they think
they can control us. The people
won't stand for it. Even if Central
commands it, the citizens won't
obey.

MASON
(quietly)
That's where we were both wrong.
It's not Central doing this. The
people are scared, Xakk.

XAKK
Why? We're people too.

MASON
We're different people.

XAKK
So?

MASON
The human race has been doing this
since the dawn of time... slavery,
segregation of races, women and
men, exclusion. When we don't learn
our history, history simply repeats
itself.

XAKK
But you can't change history. You
can change the future.

AARON, LEO (O.S.)
Xakk! Come on!

MASON
Your friends are looking for you.

XAKK
I guess I oughtta go now.

MASON
Go ahead. You know where to find
me.

With a little wave, XAKK turns and walks out into the ALLEY.

EXT. - THE TOWER - CLOSING TIME

PETER, a short and stocky young man in his twenties, sits at
his desk, hidden from the others by the towering walls of
his cubicle. The computer is on, and WHIRS and churns out
data, scrolling down the screen, entitled STARVIEW. He looks
up.
INTERCUT SEQUENCE

ECU - Feet coming down hallway

PETER quickly begins erasing evidence of STARVIEW.

ECU - Feet coming faster

He finishes with a final CLICK of the keyboard.

CU - Feet stop; Pan Up to see SUPERVISOR's face.

END INTERCUT

PETER is now working on some other project, assumably
work-related.

PETER
Ah, hello, Supervisor.

SUPERVISOR
Staying a little late today, aren't
we, Peter?

PETER
Ah, I just wanted to get this thing
done before heading home for the
evening. You know I'm a
perfectionist.

SUPERVISOR
Yes. I trust you to lock up
everything; don't let anyone know.
(tosses Peter keys) Good night,
Peter.

PETER
Good night.

When SUPERVISOR's footsteps die down, PETER brings the
STARVIEW PROJECT back up and resumes his work.

PETER
(whispers)
Let's go...
