FADE IN:

EXT. FOREST TRAIL - NIGHT

The outlines of trees and a forest path appear. Dim shapes just visible through the fog and haze.

Clouds drift across the black sky.

An owl HOOTS.

The flecks of black in his orange eyes seem to pulsate.

In the stillness comes the sound of HOOFBEATS gradually getting louder.

Suddenly a hoof appears with a THUD and is gone.

The HOOFBEATS retreat into the distance.

A hooded figure sits astride the horse. She rides with one hand on the reigns. In the other she clasps a bundle tightly.

The pale outline of the rider’s profile is just visible behind her hood.

The horse runs hard.

The rider jabs the horse in the side with her heel.

The horse strains, running even faster, its sides heaving.

Sweat drips from the horses’ skin.

The horse breathes audibly.

The hooded figure bends her head in the direction of the bundle.

Again she urges the horse to run faster.

They pass from the forest into

EXT. MEADOW - NIGHT

a large open meadow.

The moon makes a brief appearance over them and is quickly covered again with clouds.

A thin mist hangs just above the ground.

On the horizon ahead looms a castle, its outline just visible in the darkness.

The pale, strained face of GIARA, a 23 year old woman, is focused on the castle in front of her horse.

The hurried ride across the grass continues.

EXT. BEVAN’S CASTLE ENTRANCE - NIGHT

GIARA reigns in her horse.

At the edge of the bridge leading to the castle they stop. GIARA looks to the side.

Two guards are sprawled against the wall, asleep.

GIARA smiles a hard, self-satisfied smile.

She nudges her horse forward.

They cross the bridge and pass under an archway.

EXT. BEVAN’S CASTLE COURTYARD – NIGHT

GIARA stops her horse near a small set of stone steps.

She dismounts and ties her reigns to a ring on the wall.

She looks around. Sleeping servants and guards are on the ground, propped against the walls, on steps and in doorways.

GIARA steps over a guard stretched across a small recessed door.

Stepping over him, she knocks loose an empty wine bottle from his hand.

The bottle falls down the steps, hitting them with a loud CLANK.

The sleeping guard stirs.

GIARA stops still and turns back to watch the bottle as it falls.

CLANK, CLUNK, THUD. The bottle rolls to a stop.

The guard rolls over and continues sleeping.

GIARA sighs in relief, clutches her bundle and passes the rest of the way into

INT. BEVAN’S CASTLE – HALLWAY

the hallway.

She walks with confidence even in the semi-darkness. She meets no one.

GIARA stops, turns and glances up and down the hallway.

She softly TAPS on the door.

The door opens a crack and an eye appears.

The eye looks GIARA up and down.

The door swings open to reveal

INT. BEVAN’S CASTLE - NURSERY

a nursery. The only light comes from a large fireplace on one wall.

The eye belongs to an unkempt NURSEMAID, 18, with stringy hair.

NURSEMAID
I was beginning to think you wouldn’t
come after all the trouble it was to
give her the potion.

The NURSEMAID looks warily at the corner where another servant is sleeping. The Head Nursemaid is in a chair, head back and mouth open.

GIARA does not answer. She thrusts her bundle into the NURSEMAID’S arms and walks across the room to the cradle.

She kneels beside it and looks inside.

A small baby is sleeping, a fist curled against her cheek.

GIARA fumbles under her cloak and produces a purse. She continues to look at the baby and tosses it in the NURSEMAID’S direction.

GIARA
Here is your payment.

The NURSEMAID catches the purse before it hits the ground.

GIARA picks the baby up and wraps blankets around her.

The NURSEMAID tests the weight of the money in the purse.

Suddenly, GIARA turns and steps toward the NURSEMAID.

GIARA
And if you ever say a word about
anything that has happened tonight -

NURSEMAID
I won’t!

GIARA
You will not have time to regret your
decision. Do you understand?

The NURSEMAID can only nod in answer.

GIARA
I’m glad we agree.

GIARA stares at the NURSEMAID for a moment before turning on her heel and leaving the room.

INT. BEVAN’S CASTLE – HALLWAY

GIARA retraces her steps back to the courtyard.

EXT. BEVAN’S CASTLE – COURTYARD – NIGHT

GIARA mounts her horse. She settles the baby and rides away.

HOOFBEATS and a BABY’S CRY echo into the distance.

INT. BEVAN’S CASTLE – NURSERY

The NURSEMAID puts the purse in her pocket.

She unwraps the bundle, revealing the lifeless body of a baby.

She places the dead baby in the cradle.
