An Excerpt from Pax

Jacob and Amy are sitting down in a fairly normal-looking restaurant. They smile at each other, and hold hands across the table.

AMY

How are you feeling?

JACOB

Oh, you know. I'm afraid. Afraid for what the future will bring.

AMY

Well, I'm not. I'm sure we'll do just --

A WAITER suddenly comes to their table. He looks at them expectantly, and Jacob looks over at Amy, who nods.

JACOB

Alright, I'll go first. I'll have the steak.

AMY

Same here. Medium rare.

JACOB

Can I have a side order of mashed potatoes?

AMY

Nothing else for me, please.

WAITER

Anything else for you two?

JACOB

Nope, I think we're good.

The waiter takes their menus, and walks off.

JACOB

(looking back at Amy)

So, you were saying? Are you ready for this?

AMY

Oh, I don't know. I mean, I am. In theory. I've never blown anyone up before, but, you know, I think I'm ready. I think I can do this. I've seen what that man has done to you, and I just ... Well, anyway. Are you? Ready, I mean? I know you said you were scared, but --

JACOB

Of course I'm scared. I think you'd have to be crazy not to be. But . . . I think I can do this. I certainly hope so, anyway.

AMY

What will you do once it's done?

JACOB

(laughing)

Assuming I live, of course.

AMY

Yeah, assuming you live.

JACOB

I don't know. I'd like to ... I'd like to go somewhere else. Somewhere -- different. I mean, I wish that I could go somewhere where there wouldn't be any more violence, you know? No more hatred. I can't -- I can't see where that would be, though, you know? I mean, look at us. Look at what we're about to do. We're about to destroy someone, or at least try to. I hate what we have to do. I hate it. But I feel like I have to do it. Does that make me a bad person? That I hate this world so much, and I'm willing to make it a worse place?

AMY

No, Jacob. It makes you human.

JACOB

(smiling)

And here I thought you were going to reassure me of something.
