An Excerpt from Paper Flowers
INT. KAT'S BEDROOM - NIGHT Origami everywhere. Paper cranes dangle from the ceiling; paper flowers, pandas, lions, dogs are strewn across every available surface. The room has no other decoration. There's a dresser, a bed, and the origami. KAT, fourteen years old but still only on the cusp of developing, as if some force is holding her back, huddles under the covers. KAT ABBY (O.S.) KAT ABBY (O.S.) ABBY, Kat's careworn mother, stands in the doorway. Her arms are crossed with irritation. ABBY Kat burrows deeper into the bed. KAT ABBY KAT Abby throws up her hands. ABBY KAT ABBY Kat slowly slides out of the bed, trembling with terror. ABBY Kat stands in front of the light switch, her eyes pleading Abby to have mercy. ABBY She and Kat have a contest of wills. Kat loses. Still trembling, she flicks off the light. Abby' expression softens. ABBY She closes the door, cutting off the last source of light. Kat DIVES for her bed. Before she can cover herself with her blanket, a GHOSTLY HAND reaches through her bed and grabs her ankle. She yelps, biting back an actual scream. Her eyes are as round as saucers as JACK, rail thin and grinning sadistically, rises through her bed. Half his torso is on her bed; the other half is God only knows where. JACK Kat covers herself with the comforter, tucking it around her so not a single puff of stray air could get in through even the smallest crack. Jack chuckles softly and sinks back under the bed. Under her covers, a tear trickles down Kat's cheek. |
