An Excerpt from After the Wreck (novel by Joyce Carol Oates)

INT. JENNA'S ROOM - DAY

Jenna's new room is girly, with lavender curtains. The walls
are off-white and the bedspread is light purple. JENNA is
bent over an open suitcase, pulling clothes out and putting
them in a drawer of a white dresser with a girly oval mirror
on top. She stops and stands in the middle of the room,
feeling awkward standing in the middle of her "new" room in
the McCartys' house.

Her feet are bare. She takes a couple of steps and then
flinches. Sitting on the bed, she discovers a SPLINTER in
her left foot.

JENNA (V.O.)
IN THE BLUE I didn't care about a
dumb splinter. IN THE RAW it hurt
like hell.

Jenna carefully tries to remove the splinter, but it pokes
back inside her.

JENNA
Goddamn.

She yanks the splinter out now, hard and sits on the bed.

JENNA
(muttering)
Have to wear shoes in my own damn
room.

She gets up and walks out, stepping on another splinter as
she does so.

JENNA
(groans)
Stupid wood floors!
