An Excerpt from Asa's Story
Synopsis:
This is a historical piece. It could have been one of the biggest events in American history, but instead it fell apart in a very public way with the entire nation watching and commenting on what happened. The man said to be responsible for its failure is the main character of our play.
The story begins with our main character preparing to give a public apology to his town for his role in trying to import 1000 women from New England. The only problem is, he's not exactly sure how it happened! He was going cross-country to buy some farm equipment and escort some families west and it somehow turned into a project that would bring thousands of New England women to the West Coast. He eventually procures a Civil War Battleship and interviews of dozens women daily who want to travel west with him. Along the way, there's a little romance, an assassination, several sunken ships, mistaken identities, one very loud spoken suffragette, a circus fire, a swindler and a slew of politicians.
The stage sets are very austere and the play should have the feel of an "Our Town" or "Spoon River Anthology" with the simple props used to set the scene. The main character steps out of his role in the story from time to time to share his thoughts with the audience.
