Hi! This may not be an excerpt, but here it goes anyway.
This is the story of a boy named Hugo. He has been living in a room off of a warehouse since his parents' untimely death. One day while going through his parents' things, he finds a certificate and a letter showing that he is adopted. Shocked, he decides to go to halfway across the country with his best friend, Annie, to the address in the letter to try to track down his real parents.
CHARACTER INFO:
Hugo- He's the main character, and an orphan. He usually acts indifferent to most things, but deep down in side he feels quite strongly that he doesn't belong anywhere.
Annie- She's Hugo's best friend (since middle school). She acts tough, but she cares very much about Hugo and she's still recovering from her father leaving her and her family.
Aiden- He's friends with Hugo and Annie. He and Annie have been friends for a while. He's sort of pathetic, and he has a hard time doing anything right. He doesn't go with Hugo and Annie to find Hugo's parents
The names of the characters are based on the musicals closest to me. Hugo is named after Victor Hugo, author of the book my favorite play (Les Miserables) is based off of. Annie is named after Annie (obviously), the musical I watched at least a hundred times when I was younger until I had every song memorized!
SETTING INFO:
The characters are from a city near Chicago. It's present day.
I have been writing stage plays since elementary school, but this is the first one I intend to finish! Past plays have included a story of a family traveling west in a covered wagon and a story about a klutzy waitress.
Now I feel guilty for taking up the excerpt space. So here's... (shocker) an excerpt!
Hugo
What? Huh? Oh, ah, um, nothing...
(he gathers the papers together and tries to hide them)
Uh, about the TV...
Annie
Chickening out? Really?
Hugo
It's not that it's just-
Annie
Wait, are you trying to distract me? Really? I walk in here and you have all this junk laid out, clearly you're hiding something. What is going on?
Hugo
Well, I... I found out something, and It's just... well sit down.
(HUGO and ANNIE sit down on the couch)
Annie
Um, okay, what's the big deal?
Hugo
Well, I was going through a box of my parents' old stuff and I found this...
(he hands her the adoption certificate)
So it looks like I'm adopted.
Annie
Oh my God.
Hugo
I know, right?
Annie
And you just found this out?
Hugo
Yeah.
Annie
I can't believe they would keep this from you.
Hugo
Yeah. I guess they didn't want me to get hurt or something. But I would have liked to know.
Annie
Yeah.... Wait, you aren't thinking about looking for them, are you?
Hugo
Well, yeah I found their address in a letter and-
Annie
No! Hugo, you can't!
Hugo
What? Why not?
Annie
No, Hugo, you might just be disappointed. All this happened almost eighteen years ago. They might have moved. And Hugo, no offense, but they might get upset if they see you. I'm not saying that they don't want to see you, but...
Hugo
Yeah, yeah, I know. But this is something I have to do.
Annie
I'm never going to convince you to stay here, am I.
Hugo
No, you can't.
Annie
Well, then I'm just going to have to go with you then.
