An Excerpt from Go On, Eat My Brain

INT BIG CHAIN FOOD AND DRUG STORE - LOADING BAY - CONTINUOUS

Jane and Marcel are filling the back of the truck. Pete and Bruce enter next with their carts.

BRUCE CAMPBELL
(to Pete)
Hey, I’m just going to... well, you know. I’ll be right back.

PETE
Yeah. Go, man. I think I can cover for you until you get back.

Bruce leavs his baseball bat with Pete, exiting toward the washrooms and office.

INT BIG CHAIN FOOD AND DRUG STORE - MEN’S WASHROOM - LATER

Bruce shakes, then flushes the urinal, washing his hands afterward. He leaves the washroom.

INT BIG CHAIN FOOD AND DRUG STORE - BACK OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

Bruce exits the washroom, clearing his throat as the door closes. He starts back toward the loading bay. Someone whimpers off screen, stopping Bruce in his tracks. He looks around.

BRUCE CAMPBELL
Hello?

There is another whimper. Bruce hefts his rifle, and cautiously enters the office. A young woman is hunched over in the corner, crying. Bruce takes his finger off the trigger, trying to look non-threatening.

GIRL
(almost silently, nearly incomprehensible)
He bit me. Why’d he bite me. Oh, God, it hurts.

BRUCE CAMPBELL
Hey, it’s alright. I’m not going to hurt you.

GIRL
(quietly)
Go away.

BRUCE CAMPBELL
It’s okay. My friends and I can protect you. Well, they’re not really my friends. More, people I met, but we can still protect you.

Bruce puts his hand out onto the girl’s shoulder. She turns, having recently vomited blood on herself. Bruce takes a step back.

GIRL
(quietly)
I don’t feel very good.

BRUCE CAMPBELL
(steps closer)
My God, what happened?

INT BIG CHAIN FOOD AND DRUG STORE - LOADING BAY - CONTINUOUS

Jane, Pete, and Marcel are filling the back of the truck now. Four guns, three baseball bats, and a field hockey stick are all leaning on the wall next to the bay door. James and Marshal enter with their shopping carts. James looks around.

JAMES
Where’s Bruce Campbell?

PETE
He had to take a piss. He hasn’t been gone long.

JAMES
Pete, what are the six zombie movie rules?

PETE
(counts on his fingers)
Umm... Scientists and topless or otherwise nude women are zombie fodder.
JAMES
With the exception of Milla Jovovich.

PETE
Of course. Umm... Don’t try to save loved ones. Selfish people die just before an escape route or cure is found. Selfless people die saving others. Don’t mourn someone’s death too early - your tears attract zombies. And never go off on your own, lest ye be eaten.

JAMES
Now answer me again. Where is Bruce Campbell?

PETE
Oh. Sh**.

A loud scream comes from the back office.

JAMES
Indeed.

James, Pete, and Jane run to the back, armed. Jane still has her camera in one hand.

INT BIG CHAIN FOOD AND DRUG STORE - BACK OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

James, Pete, and Jane arrive at the closed door of the back office as Bruce Campbell screams again.

JANE
God, I wonder what’s happening in there.

BRUCE CAMPBELL (OC)
You b***h! You bit off my ear!

JANE
Well, that answers that.

BRUCE CAMPBELL (OC)
Wait, where are you going now?
(beat)
Oh, God. Back to the ear! Back to the ear!

JAMES
That doesn’t sound good.

JANE
No it doesn’t.

PETE
(beat)
Back to the truck?

JAMES
Yeah, let’s get the hell out of here.
