Psychological thrillers

Possibly one of my favorite genres in the film industry. Okay, THE favorite. I've been thinking about writing one for a while now. Anyone else out there writing a psychological thriller?

[Definition: a thriller which deals with mental thrill more than physical; i.e. Memento, Abre los Ojos, Identity to some extent... Premonition (which was decent for the first 2/3, and so on.]

RE: Psychological thrillers

Do alternate reality shifts/arguably schizo thrillers fall into this category? If so, then I'm all the way in. The most physically thrilling thing I have is a thumb wrestling match to the death.

RE: Psychological thrillers

Not really that sure where my movie fits..... it's got the scope and romantic adventure of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE but the characters are more akin to something out of HIGHLANDER. So, it's a drama, but it's also a kind of horror romance adventure. I really don't know........ I mean, I've got the story and characters all hammered out... but genre...?

RE: Psychological thrillers

12 Monkeys is another great example of a psych thriller... and it involves major time shifts and seeming schizo thrills.
I've got a psych thriller I'm working on. But it's more nano territory. Trilogy+ territory. ;) Psych thrillers are prolly my favorite as well. :)

RE: Psychological thrillers

The script I'm planning on -sort- of could count as a psychological thriller, during the first half at least. Second half is closer to horror. I think. I'm having difficulty trying to shove it into any particular box.

RE: Psychological thrillers

Sounds like you have a Gothic Horror on your hands tgibfo. That, essentially, is what Psychological thriller is, for the most part, I think. Forbidden Romances and the supernatural. Fun stuff. :D

RE: Psychological thrillers

I'm working a tale where in the possible-near future, we have the ability to clone a copy of ourselves which can live a totally different life...while you sleep, it kicks in wherever it is. For all those who say, " I like my life, but I always wanted to do ____, now you can do both. Consciousness will shift to the other copy of you, while one is resting. Unlimited productivity, the life you have + the life of your dreams. However, what happens when you black out and wake up under arrest for murder? You share the responsibility for whatever your 'other half' does. What if it decides it wants to be the only copy? What if someone or something else has hijacked it while at rest? ooh, the possibilities are endless....

Your story concept sounds hella interesting, DarkAlley. It's something I would definitely watch. Possibilities, indeed. Good luck with it!

RE: Psychological thrillers

I've been developing a plot ever since I watched Heat. It's developed a great deal since then. I'm trying to get it to the area similar to the Usual Suspects but right now I'm only seeing it as another action, typical Seagal Picture.
(Sorry to those who like Seagal movies.)

RE: Psychological thrillers

I think my script would fall into this category. For the majority of the movie, you won't know whether the villain did it or not, but then it will turn out he didn't. The audience will discover that once he's been killed. So a tragedy element as well.

Funny you mention Memento and Premonition. I loved those movies and included them in the description of my screenplay.

Cheers!
