Trying to Decide

I was hellbent on writing an epic/futuristic adventure, but I watched Back to the Future last night and now I'm thinking that I want to write something a little lighter and...more fun, I guess.

What does everyone else like. Fun or Epic? Just curious.

RE: Trying to Decide

It all depends on what you think you'll be able to work on for a month, really. In my opinion, fun and epic both have big flaws. Fun can be tacky if the wrong jokes or humorous moments are abused, and epic isn't generally appreciated as well by audiences (too much effort involved in watching it, and often 'too long'). I'd take an epic over a fun movie almost any day, but it depends on the mood I'm in.

There's also the fact that I can't stand most 'fun' movies because they ARE so horribly tacky and mindless. Perhaps the best thing would be to shoot for somewhere down the middle, and maybe have your main character deal with some heavy themes/events but look at the world with a sense of humor. A little like Boondock Saints, maybe?

RE: Trying to Decide

I'm doing a mock-epic, with a big important quest and everything, but it's going to be fun too, because it's not really epic or important, and my characters get to go weird places.

Boondock Saints, good call. Maybe a similar approach might work. I guess I get the blinders on a little tight and too early.

RE: Trying to Decide

I'd most likely take an Epic any day as well. Epic movies are quite often funny enough when the jokes are added correctly, but they have the great scenery, and everything is just wonderful.

RE: Trying to Decide

I agree with Vincent - you can do both. I also think the epic format may make it easier to reach 100 pages. Unless you don't have any problems with keeping up your word count. Good luck.

RE: Trying to Decide

I enjoyed the comedic elements in LOTR, Pippin's lightheartedness and joviality became more of a childlike innocence than anything irreverant to the somber mood of the plot.
