Where are you setting your stories? (and recommendation question)

In one of the other threads it seemed like making a particular city your setting was pretty common for romantic comedy. I'm trying to set mine in a college campus (mid-tier private college) and wondering what other people are thinking about.

Also, does anyone know of a romantic comedy or (at this point) honestly any good movies set on a college campus that are based around college *students*? I'm trying to get a sense of what's been done before (though perhaps the answer is staring me in the face: not much)

RE: Where are you setting your stories?

My story is more of an action movie with romance, but I've got it set in an Albuquerque suburb in New Mexico.

You're right, there is a serious dearth of good college-student movies. Plenty of TV shows set in high school/college, but not so many movies.

My characters are all college students, though most of the script is going to take place on a road trip instead of on campus. They're college students mainly because I really have no idea what it's like to live in a city (like rom-com characters are supposed to), and I can't make myself write believable characters if they're not based on me.

Heh, I have that basing characters off myself thing too. It gets really sticky if you end up accidentally basing them off of friends. I'm going for a campus setting though, which is the main reason I'm trying to grab movies set there. I'm not quite sure how to navigate the sort of seasons of life on a campus and how much you need to explain about the place they're at. Ah well, I guess this is what screnzy is for, making us write through all this...

I'm taking writer's liberty here, and sort of aiming for a modern-day royal setting, I liked the 'world' in the disney's Princess Diaries, so I'm using the same sort of setting, an actual castle, a faraway 'land' and of course, all the different important people. It's crazy, but fun. ^_^

Almost all my boys (they’re all mainly boys with a couple of exceptions since I’m going for the QAF type things but compressed) are in college too. But since it’s all set in Moscow and they’re of the upper-class sort they’re all living in apartments throughout the city rather than in the dorms.
