Sound effects

Because radio and audio dramas depend so heavily on sound, does anyone know if there is a site (or sites) out there with various types of sound effects that you can download? In the public domain, please, I'd prefer to keept this legal.

I can make a few of my sound effects on my own, but certain noises (such as leathery wings flapping) are a bit hard given my current resources.

Help is appreciated! Much thanks!

RE: Sound effects

I have two for you ...

FindSounds.com is a free site where you can search the Web for sound effects and musical instrument samples. Each month FindSounds.com and FindSounds Palette process more than 2,000,000 sound searches for more than 250,000 users.

[From their copyright policy] When you perform a search using FindSounds.com or the WebPalette feature of FindSounds Palette, you obtain links to audio files hosted by Web sites throughout the world. The sounds in these audio files may be copyrighted and their use governed by national and international copyright laws. We do not offer advice on the fair use of these files.

... so, in other words, its a search engine that points you at them but it's up to you to contact the website owner to get permission.

ljudo.com gives free access to more than 1200 sound effects. The sounds are available in two formats: RealAudio and Mp3. Audition with RealAudioplayer or download as an MP3. Ljudo includes multilingual access, which translates the word you are searching for from your language into English.

Ljudo has a Creative Commons license on it, so I assume they must own all the sound effects themselves.

I'll post more as I find them. Cheers

RE: Sound effects

A commercial sound effects site I like is
http://www.sounddogs.com/

To manually do the foley yourself, for the sound of leathery wings, you might try holding a pair of gloves in one hand by the wrist ends and manipulate them back and forth. Try several different pairs of gloves. Like good shoe work in a walk box, it takes practice.

Good luck!
