Scene Cards...Outline..Who's Using One?

I typed up a comprehensive list of the characters with a brief description of each that includes a bit about their personality. I wrote down a detailed outline for the plot. I just finished the last of my scene cards for my screenplay that got more indepth than the outline I wrote down. Now I can finally start on my screenplay!

Who else is using an outline, scene cards, or combination thereof? I know there are plenty of people who are using them and plenty of people who aren't.

Me? I'm glad I took the time to type all of it up. It really helped me tremendously. My plot went through a bit of tweaking during the process. It helped me iron out the various details and get my timeline solidly in place.

I'm hoping it will allow me to quickly type up the screenplay since all of my thoughts are in order now. All I have to do is look at one of my scene cards to know who's in the scene, where it is, when it's taking place, what needs to happen during the scene, and any dialogue I've thought of already that I want to include.

RE: Scene Cards...Outline..Who's Using One?

Oh man, this is my first time using them. They are soooooo helpful.

I wish I had a big open space to spread them out on though. It would definitely help me get an idea for pacing and mood.

RE: Scene Cards...Outline..Who's Using One?

I'm putting all of mine in a 3 ring binder. I can't spread them all out, but I can look at them all in order and get a good idea of how things are going.

Do you have Power Point or anything like that? Do you know how to set up a business card or label template in Word? You can jot down the basic information for the scene (location, time of day, characters, a few words about the scene) on separate Power Point slides or on the individual spaces for business cards/labels. From there, you can print out multiple Power Point slides on a single sheet of paper or just print out the business cards/labels. Doing that should let you look over everything over just a few sheets of paper. If you feel industrious, you can cut out the individual slides/business cards/labels. Then you can arrange/re-arrange things as you need to :)

RE: Scene Cards...Outline..Who's Using One?

I started with several scene cards, but then my story took off and I didn't bother making any more. However, I'm stalling a bit now. I think that I'm at about the end of Act I, if I were dividing it into acts, so this is a good place to sit back and outline what I've already done. I'm hoping that if I can make some notecards (I'm using Celtx, so the cards are part of the program), I can figure out how to go from here.

RE: Scene Cards...Outline..Who's Using One?

I've never used cards. I've tried and failed.

I create a fairly substantial treatment (30+ pages) and then a scene breakdown before I start scripting.

I get the first draft down very quickly from that point. My 30 pages (to date) are the result of less than 4 hours scripting.

So, I hope that gives you some confidence that things should go quickly from this point on.

RE: Scene Cards...Outline..Who's Using One?

Scene cards. Apparently they're working for me. XD

I've got no problem changing them, adding more, etc. But it's been great because I haven't been stuck.
