Shakespearean inspiration?

So, I've been looking at other forums, and it seems to me like everyone's script is a basic three act structure. But when I was outlining my script, I did five, like Shakespeare. Into, Rising action, climax, falling action, denoument.
What do you guys think are the advantages/disadvantages of both? And which one are you doing, and why? Just out of curiousity, to see if anyone else is doing five acts.

Thanks!

RE: Shakespearean inspiration?

Ah, I created my new thread before I read this. Sorry. (4 acts?)

RE: Shakespearean inspiration?

Hi there,

I'm writing a 5 Act play. Currently nearing the end of Act 4.

I think that much of the time there is little difference between a 3 act and 5 act play.

As long as the standard plot curve is there then breaking it in to acts is almost a formnality. My play could actually quite easily be a 4 act play!

Although I do have the 'formulaic' exposition and character introduction in Act 1; the inciting moment in Act 2 and the climax in Act 3; my falling action and resolution in Act 5 sort of merge in to one and could really be lumped together as a gigantic Act 4.

I grew up with 5 act plays so I guess that's probably why I'm inclined that way and that probably goes for most of us.

When I was first introduced to 3 act plays and the 1 act - 1 SCENE plays of the Ancient Greeks it did seem a bit odd to me. If you look hard enough though, you will still see that same old universal plot curve.

RE: Shakespearean inspiration?

At least you know how many acts you're going have. I don't know yet. *rolls eyes*

My play's really weird. . . I don't know quite where it's going.

RE: Shakespearean inspiration?

Same here! Acts? What Acts? I don't think i'm going to specify acts or scenes- there is only one setting anyway. lol.

Don't worry about weirdness- well I hope it's nothing to worry about because mine is the weirdest i've ever written... and that's saying something!

RE: Shakespearean inspiration?

I'm going with a five act play.

I like the five act structure because I can tell shorter acts. I'm just used to it, that's all.

It's always been my favourite style of play. I don't know what the differences are though.
