Submitting My Stage Play Script?

So how exactly do I go about submitting/selling my script?

RE: Submitting My Stage Play Script?

Once it's edited and ready to go, I'd suggest visiting community theaters in your area and seeing if they'd be willing to produce your play. Research the theaters in yoru area to see who'd have the proper setup for your show, and who'd be more likely to take a chance on a new playwright. Some theaters have contests for local talent; you can probably find out that info surfing the theater's websites.

RE: Submitting My Stage Play Script?

You can probably find last year's SF "what to do now" forum, and there is a promise that they'll put up another one. There are good ideas there.

And if you read some of the scriptwriters' blogs, you'll come across other tips.

Good luck.

RE: Submitting My Stage Play Script?

The Playwright's Companion and The Dramatists Sourcebook will give you all the info you need to submit your script to contests, regional theatres, workshops, etc.

But before you do that, why not stage a reading yourself? You can do it informally at your home with a few friends, or you could round up a director and actors and open it up to the public. Either way you'll get the immediate rush of hearing your play performed and you'll learn a lot in the process. Dialog that looks great on the page may be clunky when spoken aloud. Actors may give you insight into their characters that you never realized, or have questions for you about their motivation that reveals underwritten parts. Audience members hearing your play fresh can alert you to inconsitencies, etc. Plus it's fun.

RE: Submitting My Stage Play Script?

You've got some really good advice here so far. My advice, edit it and try to get a workshop of it before you fdo anything else. Trust me, so much happens once you add in the human element. You don't want to jump head on into a full production of your show. I personally like having a workshop period, and oyu can rally your friends to help you with this, or get a theatre to support this. Either way, workshop really work, they help beat everything out. I plan on doing at least a workshop of my show with the theatre company I'm starting next year. A lot of workshopping a show is just going in and fixing it up, and trust me, it starts out as a major renovation. Good luck with everything!
