I'm thinking of making a little story where a robot is made for a widow for companionship, by the time the robot is made however the widow has found a new partner. With the switching around of a few chip the robot is converted into some sort of simple job (waitressing, sales person, trash person, haven't decided). Although the emotional programing is not longer present the robot still feels emotion in some way. It's basically the robot dealing with their semi-humanity... I'm worried though because there isn't much plot and there have been quite a few movies and books like this. Any tips?

I think it sounds great and you should go for it. I think as long as the story deals with some new situations to put this machine in, to ask new questions about what a machine would do, then that is fantastic. If you have passion for it, pursue it.

Let me preface by saying that I respect you enough to be completely honest.

Over-used? God, yes. Unless you're a genius, you're not going to bring anything new to that particular idea. Personally, I'm really tired of the idea of a robot wanting to be human. If we ever create true artificial intelligence, it's likely to rapidly evolve into something nobody's ever seen before; there's certainly no reason to think they would want to be us.
