Outline or script - which to read first?

Having completed my script and realising I need big story changes, I've written and re-written a four page story outline for it. I'm then going to edit the script based on the new outline.

I have two script buddies that I'm swapping with so should I recommend that they read the outline first or dive straight into the script?

RE: Outline or script - which to read first?

I think it depends what you want...

If you want feedback on your ability to write a script, send them the script you've already written. Regardless of story changes, they may be able to provide you with valuable feedback on your work and ignore the flaws with the story itself.

If you want feedback on the script you are writing, I would say don't send them the script. Send them the overview for opinions, perhaps, then send them the revised script when it is ready.

If you want feedback on both... I dunno! Ask them what they'd prefer, I guess.

They may be able to suggest different ways in which your story should be reworked, so don't necessarily discount them immediately. Perhaps it would be worth giving them both an outline of the script in its current form and also the latest revised outline, so they can offer opinions on what you seem to think requires the most immediate feedback. You may find you have been a little too hard on yourself. ;)

RE: Outline or script - which to read first?

If you're confident the outline stands on its own and doesn't rely on a knowledge of the original script to make sense, share the outline.

It's a quicker read and so you'll get a quicker response and will be able to keep moving forward.

RE: Outline or script - which to read first?

Thanks for the replies, very interesting. I suppose my question is this: If I DO have the second draft of script, and I send both, should I recommend they read the outline first? Or should I hope the script stands on its own? I suppose the story is 'given away' in the outline there's no incentive to read the script! Ach, I dunno, maybe it's easier to comment on the story through the outline and comment on the quality of dialogue, pacing etc. through the script...?

"Ach, I dunno, maybe it's easier to comment on the story through the outline and comment on the quality of dialogue, pacing etc. through the script...?"

I would say largely yes, although only the script can convey whether or not the story is clearly conveyed in the script...

So it would depend what you want most feedback on - the story in particular or the script in general.

Also, don't assume that the story is the only incentive to read your script - it is not, just as the story is not the only incentive to watch a film. Many people can happily watch the same film countless times, and it is fairly safe to assume your swappees have an interest in scripts!
