Any Dramatic Musicals Out There?

I know that a lot of people write the lighter musicals, which have much more of the dance numbers than the introverted ballads, but is there anyone else out there that's writing a dramatic musical?

This year, I'm doing an adaptation of Dracula, and I figured that a great way to really accentuate the storyline was to add a lush, fantastic, Gothic score to the whole mix. I'm really excited about the new Frenzy, and I hope I'm not alone in the Dramatic Musical department!

The clouds begin to thunder. Crickets wander, murmuring...All shall know the wonder, I will sing the song of Purple Summer.

Sorry if you get this twice my first post apers to have not been posted.
I like your Idea. I Will most likely do a dramatic Musical if I have time for this.
I'm thinking.. the Epic of Gilgimesh...

Mr. L Alexander., I never knew how much your books not only shaped me- but met to me, until a few weeks ago. No one who grew up with your books grew up alone thank you.

I'm doing a twisted Romantic Dramatic Musical. xD Did I mention that it's inspired by Shakespeare? :)

Rock on! <3

Balance the lush Gothic with the occasional light music -- look at SWEENEY TODD as a model: Sondheim pitches between heavy dramatic numbers with seemingly light and frivolous songs that have a very dark undercoat. Try and find the concert version, not the abysmal film.

GILGAMESH would make *such* a great opera/oratorio/dramatic musicale. Big fan here of the poem. I have probably every major translation done in the last thirty years, and I've illustrated it, a series that's arguably some of my best artwork.

Well, I'm brainstorming for Mr. Hyde: The Musical.
I think it'll be pretty serious.

And then, on a lighter note, I'm working on Twilight: The Broadway Musical, but that's so much more light-hearted, seeing as how it's basically one giant, musical parody.

RE: Any Dramatic Musicals Out There?

hiya. you do realise that jekyll and hyde is already a musical?
I was about to suggest it as one of the gothic style dramatic musicals, as well as sweeney todd as already suggested.
Also, les mis and miss saigon are pretty serious

RE: Any Dramatic Musicals Out There?

Alright, so I ended up deciding not to go with Dracula for my Script Frenzy '09 project, but I am still going to write a dramatic musical! My new show is called "words unspoken" and follows the life of two teenagers having to live through their friends dying of a nameless plague. The show is narrated by three ghosts who do not participate in the action. They have no true relation to the characters or the plot, but they stand back and observe the story, making comments as the story progresses. I'm really looking forward to writing the show, it's going to be a lot of fun.

I can't believe it, only 18 more days until April 1st!

My latest idea might be a musical. If it is, it's dramatic. I'm interested in putting in songs to help relay some of it, and it'll probably have a soft undertone for most with a few uptempo jazzy things thrown in in the real bad*ss scenes.
