Typewriter Brigade |
Well, I already had a small note in the set-up thread, but I figured I might start up a new thread for those of us who are using typewriters for this year's Frenzy.
I'm going to be using my Olympia SM4. And as noted in the other thread, my typewriter does not have a name, nor will it gain one. That's how I roll.

Good for yoiu, dccub83!
I still haven't completely ruled out joining SF this year, but it seems unlikely.
The SM4 is a fine machine; mine is probably the best portable I've ever typed on.
I'm not big on naming my machines, either. I'm a chronic anthropomorphizer, just not a namer.
Type on!

RE: Typewriter Brigade |
I just got an Olivetti Lettera 33 (which looks exactly like the Lettera DL, go figure!) off ebay. It's my first manual, and I've really enjoyed using it so far. I find the internet an almost irresistible distraction, and the manual is my way of tearing myself forcefully from the web and disallowing myself the temptation of editing on a draft. The urge to backspace and start changing a sentence is hard to resist. And it seems somehow wrong to not type at least some of my script on it! I'm going to try to do it all on the typewriter if I can.
I really want an Olympia SM. I like the look of the SM4, but I sure hear good things about the SM9. I have to prove to myself I can be a dedicated typewriter user before I let myself purchase another though.

Roboctopus:
I have a Lettera 33 as well. Very nice machines. My Olivettis tend to get left out of some of my discussions, because they're usually not giving me any problems. But it's a great machine, very portable, gives consistenly good copy, and is smooth and precise.
The big difference, obviously, between the SM4 and the SM9 is the carriage shift vs. basket shift. I love the action of the SM4 so much that I don't mind the extra effort needed to shift the carriage. For some people that's a deal-breaker, and they prefer the SM9. You just have to find what works for you.

RE: Typewriter Brigade |
I've not really any idea about the year. Honestly, I haven't even had time lately for a full cleaning of the machine since purchase. I just popped a ribbon in, typed up a couple of pages using different setting to test it out fully and it's been sitting under my desk for two weeks now. Very sad indeed, but as the Frenzy is upon us (and I've finished my other project), it should see some greater use.

RE: Typewriter Brigade |
I created a PDF with light format lines running through it, which outline the margins as well as the tab stops for Dialogue, Parenthetical and Character Names. It's useful to me because all I can do on my typer is set the outside margins and a single tab stop (as well as hold tab to the middle of the page). But since I can't control my right hand margins, the lines act as a visual reminder of when I need to hit my return bar.
So if any other Brigade members are interested in receiving the file to aid in their formatting (you know, so you've got a little more than general idea of your actual number of pages), just send me a private message and I'll see what I can't do to get the file to you. Maybe I'll just host it, but as I am at work now, it's going to have to wait until tonight (EST).
And for any of you that take me up on the offer, definitely let me know what I can do to make the guide better (or maybe it's just perfect?).

RE: Typewriter Brigade |
How sad is this? I've determined that I have the most free time at work during my breaks, so I've decided to use Celtx to write the main script for April. But maybe I'll find the time and space over the weekends to knock out a couple of shorts on the typewriter, because I was really psyched to use it.

Aha, I knew the brigadiers would be representing in some fashion!
For Script Frenzy I'm using mainly a Royal Mercury, probably from the '60s though I haven't got round to checking serial numbers. It's a nice typer, but 90% of the time the 'a' key sticks, so I mostly avoid it. Hence atrocities like "prnoid" as well as plentiful ampersands.
I name my machines, but only when I find the perfect one. My first typewriter, a Royal portable, is named Marvin, but so far he's the only one, the rest are anonymous.

RE: Typewriter Brigade |
I'm using a Skywriter too!! 'cept I'm having some ribbon issues... do you know where I can get a real ribbon for it? I'm sorta improvising at the moment....
I really need to figure out a name for it.... I actually have three typewriters that I have adopted in my family. One is very old, I have no idea what the model is. Weighs well over twenty pounds though... and the other is sorta... lost. I'm a horrible parent!!
