Screenplays and Inspiration

I've decided to write a romantic somewhat comedy in the screenplay format.

Probably because those are some of my favorite movies. I know I have several 'chick flicks' that have inspired me.

Notting Hill, Titanic, The Notebook... the list goes on.

Anyone else agree?

RE: Screenplays and Inspiration

Why not? There are several options and inspirations available to you, but just for the heck of it, try to take it in a slightly different direction. Not saying to jettison the entire genre in favour of a something that mocks it (because that's too easy), but a new twist of some kind. But even with that, remember that the whole point is so someone gets someone else, and there's lots of lush violins during the final credits.

RE: Screenplays and Inspiration

I just finished writing a lengthy fantasy/romance novel and am planning on a good ol' fashioned happily ever after for the frenzy. I want lighthearted/happy go lucky/meant to be. It's nearly spring after all.

I'm not really under the mug. I wouldn't fit there. Pfffft. Nerd.

RE: Screenplays and Inspiration

I always felt that if I ever wrote a screenplay, I would want to write a romantic comedy since they're admittedly my favorite genre. I watch just about every single one (even if they're horrible). It's definitely great for inspiration!! My favorites are Sleepless in Seattle, Serendipity, You've Got Mail, Notting Hill, Runaway Bride... there's always a specific formula to romantic comedies, but I LOVE seeing ones that take that formula and do something new with it :)

RE: Screenplays and Inspiration

My favourites BTW are ENCHANTED (I seriously love that film and wish I'd come up with the concept because it's so freaking brilliant) and WITHOUT RESERVATIONS, which is eminently predictable but absolutely charming anyway.

I hasten to admit, I'm a sucker for chick flicks. I like just about every genre, but I have a special place for these romantic little pieces of twaddle. The best way I can think of to spend a rainy Saturday is a bowl of garlic-salt popcorn and a DVD that guarantees that someone, somewhere, is getting a happily ever after.

Not to sound cynical, but I know I wont (Not to bore you with details, but I had my shot and it lasted a long time and now it's over and that's that), which makes it all the nicer to see someone else *will*.

RE: Screenplays and Inspiration

I love me the chick flicks!

I have like 4 that I love watching:
-Just Like Heaven
-13 Going on 30
(I have a Mark Ruffalo addiction)
-Love Actually
-Clerks 2.

Yes. Clerks 2. It's a romance/bromance/great movie.

My inspiration this year is where I live. I just moved up here and I feel like there's magic in the air.

RE: Screenplays and Inspiration

I love chick flicks too! Notting Hill and Love Actually are at the top of my list (apparently I have a thing for Hugh Grant chick flicks - Mickey Blue Eyes, Music and Lyrics, Four Weddings and a Funeral, the list goes on). But yes, I would say that Notting Hill is the base of my inspiration. I read the script for it today and loved picturing it as I read.

RE: Screenplays and Inspiration

Notting Hill used to be my favorite. I read the screenplay last week too. But now I've seen sense and Sensibility, it's taken that place. I have a thing for Alan Rickman, it seems...

I, too, have a slight addiction to Mark Ruffalo. ;) He's adorable, but he seems like a normal guy. Somebody you could actually know. I like that about him.

I figure I'll end up with a romantic comedy as well. That's the genre that I watch most often. Movies like You've Got Mail, 13 Going on 30, The Holiday, While You Were Sleeping...I love it. Even if the plot is predictable, if I care about the characters, it still works for me! :)

RE: Screenplays and Inspiration

I'm a closet rom/com fan, although I tend to like the not so obvious ones. My alltime favorite is For Love of the Game. I like the agnsty as well, No Reservations and Laws of Attraction.

Plus a good NIcholas Sparks novel is never far away. Although the movies have been leaving some thing to be desired.

RE: Screenplays and Inspiration

For the Love of the Game IS a great love story. I love the push and pull of it.

I love stupid things like Dirty Dancing. I love it when the ugly duckling gets the guys.

And yeah, Enchanted was so good! Its a movie I can watch with my kids!

I love A Walk on the Moon. No, not a Walk in the Clouds or a Walk to Remember-- A WALK ON THE MOON, with Diane Lane, Lieb Shriever, and Viggo Mortenson.

Lets see, what else...Serendipity, Pride and Prejudice. I don't do chick flicks very often.

Heck, I've never even seen Ghost or Sleepless in Seattle!
