Do you plan to produce your radio play afterwards?

Do you plan to produce your radio play afterwards?

We audio guys have a big advantage over the movie scriptwrights, actually. Our scripts are much easier (and cheaper) brought to life than a movie. And (at least in Germany) it is quite common for radio stations to buy ready produced audio plays instead of just buying a script and producing them themselves (even though they still do that, too). And of course the internet offers all kinds of publication possibilites as well, like MySpace, podcasts etc.

So, is any of you planning to actually produce their play when it is finished?

I have just produced my first audio play (a short one, 14 minutes or so, scifi) and I am totally hyped up about it. It is not yet published (since I really want to offer it to some radio broadcasters first), but there is a trailer available on my homepage, in case anyone is intersted. (It is in German, though).

I did this together with a colleague who owns a "portable studio" (meaning a laptop, mixer and two good mikes actually) in my living room, had some of my friends (amateur actors, most of them) play the different parts and edited it on my own desktop PC. And it turned out to sound much more professional than I thought it would. So I can really recommend this.

I think that what you have done is excellent and I've been thinking along the same line.

That's awesome! Didn't understand a word of it of course, but the production quality seemed really high for something done in your living room.

I would love to have a go at that with my script if it works out as I see it in my head, but I really have very little clue where to start. I guess that'll be the project for May ;)

Yeah, that's the main reason why I decided to switch from TV to radio. If I wrote a TV script, it would be just for fun, cause I don't even want to think about doing anything else with it.
But a radio script, I can produce with my friends. I've always wanted to try audio drama anyway. This is the perfect opportunity.

Brille!

The technology for recording & editing audio has actually reached the point where there is no excuse for anyone not to have a go at being their own producer.

Obviously, people also do this sort of thing with video too - but there is still a huge cost advantage in working with sound. And as mentioned, podcasting technology meas that there is also a way to get your material "out there".

Have a listen to the first couple of episodes of another scifi drama, written by a friend of mine, at:

Again, this was recorded in an ordinary domestic "studio".

Wow, I just listened into that Nova Star Hunters thing. This is so great! Give your friend my compliments, very well written. Reminds me of Douglas Adams :) The actors are great, too. I am currently downloading the other episodes.

I really wish I lived in Britain, sometimes. There seem to be so much more opportunities for audio stuff there.

And thanks to those of you who have commented on the trailer. You are very kind.

Have produced my own audio stuff too and can't recommend it enough. Great fun and very good results! So as already mentioned there really is no excuse!

Hopefully I will not only complete the script this April but make some quality material for your ears to enjoy too.

Good luck everyone :)

I'm doing multiple scripts for Screnzy. One of mine is going to be an audio play. We did them in my drama class this year, and it was wicked fun. The writing process and presenting it. I even put it on my iPod when we were done. =D

Yes, absolutely.

I'm going to work with a friend of mine who's a trained actress and professional storyteller. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out! Hopefully it'll be worth our while posting it on both our websites.

RE: Do you plan to produce your radio play afterwards?

I'm writing a (eventually) six-part sitcom (only planning on doing the first 3 episodes for Frenzy). BBC Radio 4 is always looking for new stuff for its evening comedy slot, so once it's done and much polishing and editing has been completed, I'm hoping to send it off to them. They may well reject it, but nothing ventured...

Yes, I have that in mind. Since this is based on a series of books by Frank Creed, who is a friend. I'm thinking about producing it as a series of podcasts hosted on his website to promote his books.

RE: Do you plan to produce your radio play afterwards?

In the beginning radio stations broadcast hundreds of scripted shows across the airwaves. Although it is rare to hear radio dramas broadcast over radio stations today, the art form is thriving. Making your own radio drama is a fun way to pass an afternoon or two.
