This will be my first time as well, so I'm not sure if you want to take advice from someone just as inexperienced, but I do have a plan about how I will try to write my own adaptation.
First, I reread the book to get the feel of it again. I'm highlighting major scenes that can't be cut, looking for things that can be cut, and trying to figure out how to translate the settings and action from the novel into a visual picture. I'm looking for important dialogue that moves the story along. I am also looking for things that may end up being in the screenplay, but possibly in a different way or in a different order.
In the end, it seems mostly about making the story visual and keeping it moving.
