Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

This is my first year participating in Script Frenzy, and I'm not sure what made me decide to start with a Graphic Novel instead of a movie/TV show. I think reading Alan Moore's work recently has influenced me (for the record, I read Watchmen before I'd even heard there was a movie coming out), along with a few other Graphic Novels.

My art isn't horrible (actually, I'm pretty good), but I do mostly simple work, which would not go well with my storyline. Generally, I lose interest in art if it takes me too long to produce it. So I'm not planning on actually creating my work, just writing the script for it. Is anyone else planning that?

I can't draw for beans, so writing my work is my only choice ;)

Good luck!

I'll only be writing mine.... I can't draw either. I'm still working out the whole plot thing.

I'll be the odd one out and just come out and say I hated Watchmen when I read it, and I'll be doing everything in my power to make my comic nothing like it! =)

I'm in the same boat as Azuire - can't draw, but can write like no one's business. I'd love to have it drawn at some point in the future once I finish though. :)

*Deeply ashamed that I misspelled "planning." It seems I forget to look at titles when I sweep for mistakes.*

Well, taht's good to know. I have a friend who might be interested in drawing this for me, but I don't want to give her a large project to work on.

I can draw stick figures, that is about it. I'm a decent writer and i hope to make my living by doing comics. I hope that once my script is done, i can find a good artist that is interested in drawing it.

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

I'm in pretty much the same boat. I'm a decent artist, but I know that I suck at sequential stuff and couldn't do my writing justice, so I'm just scripting. I figure if I get it written and love it enough that I'll suffer through drawing it, I'll deal with it then.

I'm planning on drawing mine. Actually, I'm more excited about drawing it than scripting it. I have a friend who offered to vector it, or whatever it is that you have to do to get it colored, for me and now I'm really excited to have this program drop in my lap...

Cannot draw AT ALL, so drawing anything is out of the question.

I'd love to find some budding artists who were interested in working with me, however! I'll probably be super overpowering, though, and make them do everything my way. I'm a total control freak when it comes to collaborative works. *hangs head in shame*

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

I can draw... mildly. Like, buildings and things that aren't people. So it's pretty safe to say that I will not be drawing my script. I mean, there is a chance that I'll shop the thing around to my artistically-inclined friends if they so choose to give me assistance in exchange for, say... cookies... but chances are, that on my part, at least, this is going to be a text-only project. *Sad*

I'm more interested in creating a cohesive script, so, no. But I am drawing character shots, references, scenes, and like that. The pictures help me visualize what I'm writing.

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

I once tried to draw to go with my first GN idea. It was just basic rough draft sketches. My cousin (who has an autism spectrum disorder and is therefore unburdened by the curse of tact) said, "You are a terrible draw-er. You should let me do it." and he took it away and I have never seen it again.

I'm thinking that after my script is done I can give him a copy and not have to worry about losing all my hard work.

So, no, I will not be drawing my script.

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

Thats my biggest problem! I can't decide. My art isnt horrible, but it's also not very good. I've tried really hard to improve, but I sort of hit a plateau.

If I can find an artist I think can do my story justice, in a style I think is compatable, then I will end up asking them to draw it. Thats not my goal though. I want to be able to draw it myself.

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

I *can* actually draw, but not as well as I would like to be able to do the art for my own graphic novel. (Witness my "picture" I use here). I'm also quite out of practice...:(

On the other hand I have a professional artist-friend that is more than will to collaborate with me on this project. She's been wanting to do a project with me ever since I allowed her to read some of my work. Although it won't be until her current contract is completed....She so does NOT need the extra stress.

Not drawing mine either. The only thing I will sketch out is layout when I'm in the editing phase - it helps me with the flow of convestation across the page and I can usually manage to draw squares and rectangles. Sometimes I get crazy and put dialogue bubbles in them.

Same here, same here. Though if I can rope a good artist friend into the mix I might ask if I can draw the main character myself as a crappy stick figure... it would suit the character, who's intentionally one-dimensional. :D

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

Drawing out everything with the level of detail that I want would take ten times as long as writing it. I draw well, but slowly, which doesn't go well with many graphic novels. Sure, James O'Barr took nine years to draw "The Crow", but that was because it was an emotional process. He got twenty two pages in one go when he wanted to, but then only managed four panels in a week because it was so emotionally challenging. I could probably get two pages maximum a day because of the level of detail I want.

If I can find an artist, that would be good.

I'll probably do character sketches to help me visualize, but I don't have the patience to go through and actually draw everything.

I'm not an artist, although I've always been very drawn to art (pun not intended). Fortunately I have an artist friend or two, so if my script doesn't suck, I might just have somebody to do it for me.

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

I don't know how many other people are doing what I'm doing, but I've got a sci-fi trilogy+1 that I've been working on and my creative / writing partner suggested that I turn it into a graphic novel to build a fan base so that by the time the movies come out there will be a built in fan base (my partner has a very good business brain). Since I can't draw to save my life, I've been working with an artist who will be drawing my script once it's done. What's been cool is that we have had some collaboration time, so he's been involved with the script from the beginning. Best of luck to everyone!

First timer here, too! I have a limited experience with comic scripting, but much more then with anything else. :D

I kinda did up a really, really, rough outline to attempt to keep myself on track. I showed it to an artist friend and he is actually interested in doing the artwork for me. So if it gets done, I have an artist!

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

My plan is to maybe draw some of my script. :)

Rather than write one 100 page script, I want to do it as multiple shorter scripts, at around 10 pages each. Then I can pick the ones I like afterwards and turn them into comics. For me 10 pages of screenplay style scripts, tend to be around 30-40 pages of comics.

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

I would like to draw mine, but my art is far from good enough to do even a decent job, so I probably won't. The script itself will probably end up in a drawer never to be touched or read ever again. I'm okay with that.

It seems a number of us are in the same boat ^_^ With the remaining half-week, I want to finalize character sketches and setting sketches, just to get myself familiar with my world, and maybe during Math class I'll doodle some panels....

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

I am an artist, but my art style is a lot more cartoony than what is suitable for a standard graphic novel. So once I'm done with it I'm planning on giving the script to a good friend who is an amazing artist, and ask her to draw it out for me. I'm going to draw maps and make character sketches as I go along to help her, but my art style wouldn't do my idea the justice I want to do. I'm more of a writer at heart than an artist, so I figured I'd go for the part I enjoy the most.

I'm not planning on drawing mine either. I gather most major comic-book studios will take scripts without drawings anyway. I'm sure I read that somewhere...

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

I'm absolutely not drawing mine, as there are much better artists out there and I am firmly a 'writer,' but I will sketch my characters and maybe the odd landscape feature just for my memory and spatial planning. I'd love to find an artist who shares my vision. I'm really influenced by Neil Gaiman and classic literature. I doubt I'll ever see it as anything more than a black and white script, but I dare to dream...

Impossible. The visions I have for the comic and my horrific talent at drawing will not end well. I do like writing it however. I can't really see it being a movie or any of the other spaces, so graphic novel works absolutely well!

I'm endeavoring to learn to draw, but I still suck at it pretty badly, so I'm sticking to writing.

Thankfully my best friend is an artist and has agreed to draw it. We've been looking for a project to do together for years, so it's all falling in to place nicely.

RE: Anybody NOT palnning to draw their Graphic Novel?

I decided to do a webcomic. Instead of drawing (because I'm made of massive fail when it comes to drawing consistent characters) I'm using pictures. There are many ways to use photography to create even line art.

You just have to keep in your mind what you have access to and what you're able to work with. The same as the artist who needs to consider what's in his scope of drawing abilities.

I'm not sure if this makes sense. I've had alot of coffee.
