Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

Every script falls in more than one category. What's your sub?

My sub (for the one I'm currently focusing on) is musical, or tragedy.

RE: Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

@ putonawritersmask: a musical tragedy? Could be interesting...

My sub-genre would be "contemporary realism" or something like that, following a redemption plot (I'm a HUGE sucker for that type of story arc).

RE: Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

mine is kind of a tragedy but also a bit of a romance in a way... not really sure how to sub-genre it since it's got elements of both.

@ fidheallir: contemporary realism?? redemption plot? would you mind explaining what each is? it sounds like an interesting type of story arc

RE: Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

While my script falls squarely in the realm of drama, I would also describe it as having an ensemble cast, following a journey or "on the road" plotline, and being a little absurdist. Sub-genres? Well, it's got comedy, and it's got romance (as every drama should, and if not romance then at least bro-mance.) There won't be any singing or crime-solving or horror or spaceships. A lot (a LOT) of flashbacks, a lot of subplots (again, ensemble cast), and some unusual camera conventions will characterize Somnambulant. The flashbacks are gonna be a lot of fun, because I've started the series with a buttload of stuff having already happened and a buttload of relationship drama already lurking overhead.

Maybe a little action, very rare violence. Conflict's no fun if it isn't physical at least every once in a while.

RE: Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

i'm actually telling three stories at once, so ensemble, but i think it's a coming-of-age sort of drama. there are tragic elements, but it's not really the point of the stories.

RE: Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

@fidhealir: It's tragedic with hints of angst. I'm going to have an interesting time with this. The tragedy mostly comes from the topic it's on and the facts and events splattered throughout.
And, yours sounds interesting, (I'm a sucker for descriptions with big words paired together). Redemption plots are usually good fics.

@oUbObCaT17: Meaning that the main character has a complete breakdown after his best friend kills himself and has to work his way back up from rock bottom.

RE: Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

Hmmm.
I guess a bit of a fantasy comes in. One of the characters is a Betta fish, but he's a fish only for the first act, and the story isn't about how the heck this Betta fish turned out to be this stunning youngster. :) I'm playing it out as a symbolic trick though.

RE: Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

Romance/Drama - should a woman marry a man who is perfect ... except that he is terminally ill and they will have at most a year together filled with suffering?

I'd call that tragedy except she decides it's worth it and they decide to take what joy they can - so it's more positive than negative.

RE: Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

Oh good! So I can just have romance as a sub-category? Phew! I really want there to be more to this than the relationship at it's core.

My script is about a girl with an obsessive crush over a boy from her childhood. The plot is complicated by a suicide they both witnessed, and the fact that they both have extra-sensory stuff going on. It takes place when they're adults, and the guy is going to kill himself, but sees the girl once before he does.

(I need to construct a better synopsis...yikes)

RE: Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

Drama/science-fiction. But I'm counting it as a drama because it's much less about the crazy sci-fi shenanigans and much more about who the characters are and how they relate to each other. The superpowers and the mad scientist are cool, but they're really just an excuse to putting all these crazy, intense, wonderful people together.

Tragedy/romance.
It's a contemporary Romeo and Juliet adaptation.
A lot of drugs. A lot of violence. A lot of secrets. And, of course, that undying love (and that statement is too ironic for words...)

RE: Tragedy? Musical? Romance? What's your sub-category?

Post apocalyptic sci-fi. It's got an amnesiac exploring an uninhabited NYC to regain his memories, but that's just the setup. It's really about showing how crappy his life was, and how that makes his life even crappier in the present.
