Anyone else writing a musical?

I'm doing an adaptation of A Little Princess for a local community theater. Last I heard we'll be holding auditions during April, so I've REALLY got to get a move-on.

But anyway, it's a musical. Which is, frankly, NUTS. Anyone else embarking on this insanity?

(And yes, I've already started it. I'm about halfway through the script... but I don't consider myself cheating at ALL, becuase by my criteria, this thing needs to be 100% finished, 100% edited, and 80% ready to PERFORM by the end of April. Gulp.)

RE: Anyone else writing a musical?

Yes, I am writing a musical, as well. I feel I've been in enough of them and seen enough scripts for them that this is my "best shot" genre. The plot? Who knows, but one of the songs is a tongue in cheek alien abduction production number. I dreamed it the other night, and I figure I'll just go with it. And no, it wasn't in the style of Guffman. Think more along the lines of Easter Parade meets Rent. Or An American in Paris meets Annie. With some Les Mis thrown in because it is, after all, my musical.
Happy writing, everyone!

RE: Anyone else writing a musical?

Sounds brilliant! The alien abduction number is actually hinting Spamalot to me... I would never have thought of Easter Parade meeting Rent but it's exploding with possibilities!

RE: Anyone else writing a musical?

I wasn't going to, but I've just re-fallen in love with an idea I had quite a while ago. So, it looks like I'm going to be writing a musical after all! I'm no composer, though, just a book-writer and lyricist, so I'm waiting until the April draft is done to hand my rough lyrics over to one of my writing partners. I just don't have the time to collaborate next month! :)

RE: Anyone else writing a musical?

Yep, that's me! I'm working on a dramatic musical called "words unspoken". I think of it kind of as 1/3 Romeo and Juliet, 1/3 Rent, and 1/3 Spring Awakening. I'm only one scene away from being finished with the outline, so that is really getting me pumped up for the Frenzy. I'm going to try to get mine at least developed, if not 100% produced, by the theatre company I'm starting this fall. I'm hoping that I can get a workshop started somewhere (not necessarily my drama group) next Summer/Fall and I'd love to have the show performed full out by my drama group in August/September of 2011. I know, it's a crazy plan, but isn't that why they call it dreaming?

The clouds begin to thunder. Crickets wander, murmuring...All shall know the wonder, I will sing the song of Purple Summer. ~~~~~ NaNoWriMo '09: The Killing Game Script Frenzy '10: Project TBD http://thenovelwriter.wordpress.com

RE: Anyone else writing a musical?

Yes!!! I'm not alone in writing musicals!!! Those all sound like great ideas!!!! Mine is a part RENT (Cuz who doesn't like RENT?!?!?), Part Avenue Q (comedy wise) and Part Les Mis cuz its just amazing.
But the plot is about three rommates, who are all girls(please hold off on the ohmg lesiban subplot. Not happening sry), who are rencently out of college. Two of the girls are laid off while the third is still working. She then gets laid off and lies to her friends about getting a promotion. To get money she convinces them to write a musical with her. Add in a dash of humor, two pinches of adult content (sex, swearing, and sucicde attempt), a cup of ackward stituations, 3 teaspoons of friendship, and 1/4 tablespoon of singing and dancing and you have...well the working title is Life in Limbo but I need a better title. So suggestions would be helpful.
I don't compose music but I have an ear for it. I write lyrics and the book though. So do you all think it has a chance?

No day but today!

RE: Anyone else writing a musical?

First, let me say, I created this account for the sole purpose of responding to this thread. So consider yourself -I don't know- appreciated? Valued? Whatever.

Anywhat. Yes, I am writing a musical. It's an idea that's been floating around up in here [insert thrust to nogin] for some time. It's not a mix of anything, really, but was based on this annoying tub of lard in my school. He's sort of everyone's comic relief, so here's the synopsis of:

GREG: The Musical

Greg Harris was always kicked around in High School. Then, by some miracle, he graduated. Grown-up life was hard for Greg-- harder than anything he'd ever faced before. If it wasn't for the help of the Success Genie, Greg's life might have actually started to look up. The Success Genie grants the young hippo-boy his greatest wish, and his imaginary friend, Candy, has come to life! But what happens when Candy starts dating Chet Tyler, the hottest guy on the block?

That's everything I'm releasing at the moment. There's so much more involved, but it would be a pain to dish out the details. The songs range from "A Little Help from Paul" (where Greg appreciates The Beatles), A parody of "I Want Candy", and "Jump, Greg" (where the two narrators try to persuade Greg into throwing himself into the river).

Woahhh. I'm glad I got that out of my system.

RE: Anyone else writing a musical?

IF I write during Screnzy this year, it will be a musical.

It's looking pretty unlikely right now. I'm swamped with work and other projects (costuming My Fair Lady for our local community theatre, reigning in my 14 yo daughter-drama queen, and generally having a life, among other things).

But I WANT to write a musical. An adaptation of my 2008 nano novel. Several obstacles, prime among them is that I didn't finish the 2008 novel. I just added a bunch of notes about the scenes still to write.

Another obstacle: I know virtually nothing about musicals.

I'm finding this and the tips thread helpful, though.

So historical fiction meets musical. I'm thinking Dickens.

I'd welcome encouragement, if anyone has some to spare.

:-)

RE: Anyone else writing a musical?

Mine is pretty much avenue Q meets fame but there's also hints of cabaret, high school musical (yes i said it!) carmen, sex and the city, and mamma mia.

my plots about a group of uni kids and their lives - pregnant dancers, affairs, plagierism, drugs etc

it's quite cheesy but hey... they're the musicals i love! I'm not too good at writing music but will probably deal with that after april's over!

RE: Anyone else writing a musical?

I'm not actually taking part this year, because I promised myself I'd use April to take the time to finish writing my current novel before exams come on, but during the next few weeks I have a lot of free time, and so if I DO find the time I may not be able to help myself. If I do decide to write a script, it'll be a musical. Don't know what it'll be about or anything, but who cares? Musical theatre is blatantly the best kind of theatre. :P

RE: Anyone else writing a musical?

Yes, I am indeed writing (or attempting) a musical this year. I'm a decent lyricist, and an alright Playwright. I'd have to approach a composer for the actual musical score though. However, my play is I Left My Hat on Stage Left. I plan to include several songs of my own design such as, 'My Life is Ruined!,' 'Forget About The Hat,' 'Life is a Wonderful Thing (To Enjoy),' and 'Go Away, We're Closed!'

Brief Song Synopses: My Life is Ruined!: Basically as it sounds. The main character believes his life to be ruined by leaving his hat behind.

Forget About the Hat: A bunch of friends singing about him forgetting his troubles and just having fun.

Life is a Wonderful Thing (To Enjoy): A drunken Dean sings about how wonderful life can be. If you just take a sip that is.

Go Away We're Closed!: Sung by the Grouchy Janitor, annoyed by 'those darn forgetting and fretful kids!'

I wish you all the best of luck on your Screnzy, or other Musical or otherwise, scripts, screenplays, or otherwise!

I am also writing a musical, but am taking it upon myself to write the music during May, rather than doing it all during April.
