First-Time Horror

I'm writing a supernatural horror/dark fantasy screenplay (adaptation of a short story I'm still working on).
I've never written horror before, I don't really read that much horror, and I don't really watch that many horror movies. By which I mean, I really like fantasy, it's my favorite genre, and I have read/watched horror stories, but not a lot, and definitely not usually watching them for form, and stuff like that.
I do play World of Darkness role-playing games, which is supernatural horror (and holds a bit of inspiration for my story), but that's about it.

So, I'm going to need help.
Basic premise: the MC breaks a taboo/geiss/whatever, and catches the attention of the Fae, who snatch her up and take her to Faerie, which is a dark and scary place because the Fae are not human, and don't think like humans do, and so are often completely incomprehensible to most humans. She is tortured/abused (usually not even on purpose, because the Fae don't think like we do), and tries several times to escape, and the Fae catch her several times, and I won't give out the ending ...

I guess, first of all, does it sound interesting? I mean, I'm going to write it no matter what, because Screnzy starts in two days, but, does it sound interesting? Does it sound like a horror movie?
I guess I'll ask more specific questions once I start going ... I don't even know where to begin asking questions, because horror as a genre is practically unknown to me ... you know?

RE: First-Time Horror

sounds like a dark fantasy to me, not "true" horror, more of a subgenre of fantasy. But that's fine, sounds great, go for it! :)

RE: First-Time Horror

I think it's a very good idea.
I'm sure this will be a horror story if you want to be as well. The horror usually arises from the execution. Just look at some of Lovecraft's work for proof of that.
Go for it.

RE: First-Time Horror

I'll chime in and agree, go for it. I'm writing horror myself, and not particularly familiar with the genre. (I'm a big Stephen King fan, but not one for horror movies. Go figure.) I'm nervous about doing it "right" too (and a lot of my script is turning out to be descriptive action bits) but I'm not letting that get in the way of writing the story I want to tell--

and neither should you.

RE: First-Time Horror

Thanks, everyone, I really appreciate the encouragement.

I now have a horror-genre question: my story relies somewhat on knowledge of the Fae and generally of faerie stories, like the idea of breaking taboo, or the fact that the Fae don't like cold iron and rowan wood (similar to vampires with crosses and garlic).
How much of this should be explained in the movie? And how would I go about doing that? The MC is a normal, modern American girl, and so she probably wouldn't know too much (especially if she's breaking the Rules out of ignorance and catching Their attention); and the Fae Themselves are not likely to explain it to her, especially not about the cold iron and rowan.
How do I deal with it, then?

Thanks again,

RE: First-Time Horror

well if she is overtly breaking the rules and then bad stuff happens when she does the audience will put two and two together to work out that she is doing things that piss these fae off...you don't have to whack the audience over the head with exposition, they can figure it out and love you when you let them. Hope that helps. :)

RE: First-Time Horror

I'm thinking that you may need another captive character to help explain things to your MC. Doesn't have to be a friendly character or even that cooperative, just someone who knows the Faerie lands and ways and can give out information that she and consequently the audience needs. Don't always make him available to her or even that helpful and the audience will still be able to try and figure things out. But eventually they will need confirmation of their ideas.

Quiltlynx 1. Write 2. Keep writing 3. Tighten it up 4. Put it on the market 5. Keep it on the market until sold.

RE: First-Time Horror

Thanks for the input!
I actually was thinking of doing this already. I figure, another "stolen child" who can at least say, "this is Faerie", plus a brief scene/prologue in the beginning that explains a few things but also sets the theme/mood would do wonders for my script.
