In denial of my genre.

I was just over in Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror, lookig for a place to jump and realized....

"Oh, crap...I don't belong here...I belong in-"

(gulp)

"Romance?"

All my stories are love stories no matter how much other matter I try to infuse them with.

This year is about obsession- and obsession a young girl gets with a boy, complicated by a tragedy and a lot of ghosts, visions, etc.

I really don't want to write a chick flick. I wouldn't want my movie sold next to Twilight.

(that being said, I have a closet love for Twilight complete with an Edward poster in my closet...and I'm 31.)

Perhaps this snobbery of trying to write an epic oscar-worthy indie should just go away and I should just write the love story thats in my...heart?

Anyone else experiencing this sort of surrender?

Carolyn- busy typing with one hand, drawing with the other- and best case scenario, there's a microphone to be singing into...

RE: In denial of my genre.

I don't really see a reason for you to be thinking about the genre yet. Just write your story the way you like it, have fun on the process.

Once it is ready, you'll be able to classify it properly. :)

RE: In denial of my genre.

i'll join you in denial....this is so not the genre i usually write. i don't watch chick flicks unless they're period pieces with costumes to distract me from the mush-i-ness. yet here i am writing something that i almost consider sappy -and secretly i'm enjoying it (at times).

my story is rather ever after meets enchanted: all kicked off by my rather mean thought: what if the prince had never woken up snow white?? i took the idea and ran with it. can't really argue with inspiration, right?

RE: In denial of my genre.

I'll add myself in as well. I've tried just about everything else but romance but try as I might, this idea is stuck in my head and these characters don't want tragic circumstances, they want to be happy and goofy and what the heck, why not?

RE: In denial of my genre.

This story is my Nano Novel- gone to film! (lol) I struggled with describing it then, as well- I REALLY wanted to call it literature.

I want to write about something big- something epic and world wide, somehow. But, out of the three stories I've ever seriously thought of, they all come down to a man and a woman *in love*. ((gags a bit))

Who am I kidding? I guess I'm trying to sound smarter than I am. In the process I could loose some good ideas, so, I'll try to embrace it. I won't force anyone to die or be killed, I won't make this some moral question story, I won't try to ramp my characters up into superheros or something like that.

So, though it needs no categorization yet, I will still categorize it (on my Frenzy page, at least) as Drama/Romantic. Maybe just Romantic.

RE: In denial of my genre.

I'm also in denial of my genre. I set out to write a comical political stage play with some romantic comedy thrown in but it's just not coming.

It all seemed full of random comedic touches before I started but right now it seems a bit too down-to-earth serious and dull. I'm hoping it will pick up and if not I'll just have to tweak it into the right genre balance in the rewrite.

RE: In denial of my genre.

I barely stuck my head in this topic because I knew how much it applied to me. In fact, on my little bio page it still says "Comedy". And I couldn't even click it without feeling guilty because I know that at the very least my screenplay is a "Romantic Comedy", which is almost worse than plain romance. My characters make cardboard look exciting, the plot is horribly cliche and the only thing that gives it any sort of definition is the romance aspect. Safe to say my screenplay isn't going to be seen by anyone else and I'll be very tempted to burn it at the end of the month.

My only relief is that the two main characters are already married so there's no reason for a large song and dance to get them into a relationship.

Seeing that I thought my Nanowrimo started beautifully and ended horribly, I'm a little scared how this is going to end if it slides downhill at the same rate.

RE: In denial of my genre.

Oh very much so.... this started as a NaNo story back in 2k7 and I abandoned it went it went fluffy... nano 2k8 was suppossed to be a dark social commentary and jump the fluff shark as well.

SO i took the fluff and ran with it... and now i have a sleepless in seattle meets high fidelty. We shall see where this ends up.

RE: In denial of my genre.

I'm pretty sure my current story belongs in romantic comedy. Yes, there are supernatural elements (God, angels, the devil, post-death experiences). But it's not a fantasy story--not really. It's about a dead muse falling in love with the writer he's supposed to cure of writer's block.

Then again, cross-genre stories have a proud tradition. The Princess Bride? Arguably a romance with fantasy elements. And William Goldman, who wrote a TON of screenplays, cites this story as one of the few he really loves, along with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (not a romance) (though some would argue).

The Princess Bride is a major testimony to why romantic comedies are better than romances.

RE: In denial of my genre.

Yep, definitely what's happening to me. I wanted to write a drama, but my main characters just want to get together...oh well, I'm going with what they want, seeing as if I don't, they'll just cast the 'writers block' curse on me!

So, we're a bunch of closet romantics. I guess we could be worse?

RE: In denial of my genre.

I also love Romance comedy genres. One notable movie is "Fools Gold". Romantic yet funny at the same time.
