Rights to an adaptation

When you write to an author about rights to a book, what do you say? I know you don't need the rights for ScriptFrenzy, but if I wanted to get the script produced, what would I say in a letter to the author?

RE: Rights to an adaptation

Keep it very professional. Introduce yourself. Say very clearly what form of adaptation you have in mind. Describe some of the things you have in mind in making the trasition from ________ to ___________. Wrap it up by saying you look forward to the opportunity of discussing this at greater length in the future.

If the author doesnt respond, dont write again. Accept that that is his/her way of saying no.

RE: Rights to an adaptation

If you really want to produce the adaptation then get a couple of actors, a decent video camera and shoot one of the scenes the best you can. Burn it to DVD and send a copy of it along with the script. There is a chance this might persuade the author better.

It worked for Robert Rodriguez when he approached Frank Miller for Sin City.
