How to Meet Him...

This is probably the worst story idea I've ever had, but I started late so this is all I've got.

To the point, my plot so far has been about a young upper class lady in the past whose father dies, leaving her an enormous debt. She ends up losing everything to creditors, and to gain back some social status (not to mention pay off the remaining debt), she agrees to marry some guy's son.

The only problem is - the father's trying to marry his son off to gain some social status himself. See, the guy she's marrying is a little... disturbed. Not like, "Oh, I'm going to stab your eyes out and eat your heart." More like an eccentric recluse with some phobias? Not quite right, but he's neurotic to say the least. (I know, it sounds like a bad Hallmark meets Lifetime movie written by an emo teenager. Trust me, I don't usually write this stuff...) Blame it on the time constriction.

Well... Onto my question, though... I was wondering - given that the guy has a distaste for people and would probably rather chop his own feet off than meet someone, how would you go introducing him to her?

So far, I've had that she's just agreed to the marriage and has moved into the father's/son's manor-thing, and that's about it. I have to get the two to meet sometime.

So, I have several thoughts. The prevalent one is that... maybe they are legally married without even having a marriage. That they'd have it all down on paper, but never meet face to face to get married. Then, I'd just move her into his room. Which would certainly be a fast way to introduce him, while getting him to tolerate her... kind of.

But, my main question is - is that legal? Or, possible? Like,

"All right, Miss. If you'll just sign here, you'll be all married."

If not, I've also considered him introducing himself to her via a letter, sent through the house by a servant. To get to know her, sort of. But I'm going for more of a "yowza, I hate people" vibe rather than a "gee, I'm so shy"/"isn't this romantic" thing. It's more of a drama than a romance - though, certainly, I intend for them to fall in love. (Wow, does this sound as stupid to you as it does to me?)

I also considered him just sucking it up and inviting her to meet him. But... then, that's not much of a phobia, is it?

Help?

RE: How to Meet Him...

You could definitely play the scene for comedy.
For example, you could have the father arrange a dinner meeting or some other "date" with the FMC over his son's head, and fib to the son about what's going on. For extra problems/hilarity, he could also fib to the FMC about the MMC ("Oh, he's just shy and romantic", or "he's been traveling"...get creative) When the MMC gets to the meeting, he can be making excuses to get away, and make himself as obnoxious as possible to the FMC.
The father could also bribe him into marrying the woman somehow-- for example, attach an inheritance to it.

RE: How to Meet Him...

They could keep bumping into each other in the house without realizing who the other person was (i.e. thinking she's a maid, he's a butler). Comedic effect, perhaps! Then, someone calls one of them by their name and they could have an "oh my gosh" moment.

If you want them to get married without meeting, do it. It's fiction! People will probably be more entertained by its drama value than annoyed by it being inaccurate.

I think it sounds pretty great, actually :)
