Script to Book

I know a lot of people said that they were planning on adapting their script into something else.

Have any of you got a deadline for when you want to finish your adaption?

I wrote my Frenzy as an outline for a novel.

Hoping to finish in three months. September at the latest.

RE: Script to Book

One of my scripts I want to change into a novel because I think the story works better as a novel, I'm thinking I might do it for NaNo if I don't have it done before then.. But I do want it done, edited and everything by the end of the year so I can start sending my work out around Christmas time..

RE: Script to Book

I went the other way: I took my NaNoWriMo 2007 novel and turned it into a script for 2008.

Now, I think I'll go back to that script and flesh it out some more.

And then I'll probably turn it back into a book!

RE: Script to Book

That's usually how I roll to, belphebe. My 1st novel was written into a screenplay last year and if I had my nano novel finished by April I would have written that into a screenplay, as well.
The one script I really wanted to focus on this year wouldn't work as a novel though. Some things are just meant to be screenplays and some meant to only be novels. This script was one of them.
I'll have to come back to it in a little while. I have to finish my nano novel for proof copy to be published by June 1st. I'm hoping I get there in time. A few life situations is getting in the way...surgery for one.

RE: Script to Book

I did the same thing, without realising it - wrote my script as a novel outline.

At some point, I hope to actually finish it, because I feel I owe it to the characters I dragged through horrendous experiences during April. I'm having difficulties, though. I need someone to look through it and tell me what works, but everyone I can think of to ask would either be too nice or wouldn't understand that it's only a rough draft, more an extended plan than a serious effort to write well. A Catch-22, really - if they aren't being too critical, then they aren't critical enough.

I'm probably going to have a go at doing a second draft myself over the summer and see how that turns out. I'll also promptly forget about it come November and NaNoWriMo.

CatsEnjoyPotatoes, why not swap with someone here? We have a forum just for script swapping, and you can work with someone who understands Script Frenzy and what it is (and isn't.)

RE: Script to Book

I wrote my script as a regular screenplay rather than a comic script, but I'm planning to turn it into a graphic novel. My deadlines right now are as follows:

- Complete a quick revision of the entire screenplay (just to take the most glaring errors out) by May 10th*
- Divide the first chunk of script into 60 graphic novel pages by May 30th
- Sketch those 60 pages during June for Nanomango
- Ink them during July
- And have all of them fully coloured by August 30th.**

* Which is tomorrow, and I'm now at page 64 out of 168. ...yeeeeah.
** Which is fully impossible, I know. But hey, that's what I thought about winning ScriptFrenzy, too.

Once I get those first 60 pages done, I suppose I'll have to set some new deadlines, seeing as there's probably 350 more pages of graphic novel left in the screenplay by that point. But we'll see about that when we get to it.

RE: Script to Book

I did/doing the exact same as belphebe. (mwaahh I'm rolemodeling you... Jk) Mostly because Nano07 JUST WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE! All attempts to work on something else have been foiled. I give up now, and succumb to the drama.

I know I've been saying this for nearly two years, But I will FINISH the full draft by October 2009 -with NO holes!!

I mean it. I really do. Then, perhaps, I shall finally be free of the tyranny.

RE: Script to Book

So, an update on the turning-screenplay-into-comic project. My deadlines for this month were as follows:

- Complete a quick revision of the entire screenplay (just to take the most glaring errors out) by May 10th
When I posted that on May 9th, I still had almost a hundred pages left to go. Somehow, through an entire day of revising on the 10th, I managed to make this deadline. Note that when I say "quick revision", I'm by no means referring to a full second draft or anything. This was just taking the typos out, fixing some awkward sentences, omitting the odd scene or two... But no full scene rewrites or anything.

- Divide the first chunk of script into 60 graphic novel pages by May 30th
Just in case this was unclear, by "divide" I didn't mean draw those 60 pages (as was probably evident from the sketch-ink-color deadlines that follow this one). I merely meant breaking down the script into 60-or-so sections that will each make one comic page, and then dividing those sections into separate panels. I'm happy to announce I finished that on the 20th already, and so I added the following two deadlines (though I neglected to post them here):

- Create the preliminary page layouts for each comic page by May 30th
Where by "page layout", I mean the empty black borders that'll surround each panel when I draw it, to get a general idea of what I want my pages to look like. I set this one on the 18th when it became apparent that I was going to complete the "dividing" part well ahead of schedule, with May 30th as the deadline, but already managed to finish all 62 page layouts by today.

- Take photo references up to page 28 by May 31st
I set this one on the 18th as well. Basically I'm going over my script and identifying all the panels I know I'm going to find difficult to draw (mainly, characters standing/sitting/lying in weird poses), and take photos of me in those poses so I can use them for reference later on. This involves a lot of silliness in front of my webcam and makes me feel completely ridiculous. Anyway -- I finished that last Saturday for all the complex panels up to page 39.

So, since those are now done as well, here's another two new deadlines:
-Do character sketches of all characters in the first 4 chapters by May 31st
-Take reference photos up to page 62 by June 7th

And of course, the other original deadlines still stand as well:
- Sketch the first 60* pages during June for Nanomango
- Ink them during July
- And have all of them fully coloured by August 30th.

*Now actually 62 as it makes for a more logical chapter break.

So yeah, I'm keeping myself ridiculously busy -- and loving it.

RE: Script to Book

Mine started off as a script for a two hour pilot, but has morphed into a series of three novels.

Today is July 15, 2009.

My deadlines are as follows:

To have the first novel completed by: Halloween, 2009 in order to have something fresh to start for NaNo.

The second novel completed by: Valentine's Day, 2010

The third novel completed by: Memorial Day, 2010

Send out queries beginning the week of: November 8, cause it's my birthday.

Best of luck to everyone!
