I do nano (though not consistently). The one year I did it - I won. I think that was in 2007. This is my first Screnzy. And I never even HEARD of the other challenges, but I think I'll check them out.
I hear ya about just doing something - but we can get so caught up in "just doing something" that what we just do is meaningless and as demotivating as doing nothing at all. I suspect you do these things to try to jump start something and figure, like most of us, that if you at least try to do something then that's enough of a seed for the universe to grab hold of an run with. But I suspect that hasn't been the case so far, and it probably won't be.
I challenge you to follow through on the things you've created already. Take the next step to get your plays read or send your book to an editor. When you start getting rejection letters - then you will know you're doing something! Every "no" leads you one step closer to a "yes" - so start collecting those "no's" NOW!
Write new stuff, but develop the old stuff. Then develop the new stuff while you rewrite the old stuff. Keep pushing ahead!
Best of luck!
