Comedy

advice from seasoned comedy writers?

My script is largely a romantic comedy, but unfortunately it's turning out to be comedy in the Classical sense rather than the American sense. I've noticed that most of the great romantic comedies of the past coupla decades relies on situational humor (caught with the pants down, being forced to get a lap dance, setting the parents' house on fire, etc.) and other such set pieces that do little to move the plot but make the movie entertaining and maybe even make the two leads like each a little more.

I spend more time laughing at myself than writing... JOKES AS A TOPIC

This is a forum for all of our best jokes.
I spend more time laughing at myself than writing and when I finally get to writing my ideas I spend more time procrastinating, and then don't get me started on my comedy "research" (why does Netflix have all the Monty Python's Flying Circus episodes??? WHY??).
Ignore that.

How to integrate comedy...?

Comedy is something I am trying to get better at writing. Of course, I am used to writing novels. So I have two questions:
1. I'm writing a thriller/mystery, with comedy, but not outright(and it's not the silly/dumb comedy). How should I approach integrating the comedy?
2. What's the difference between writing subtle comedy in novels and scripts?

Your Ideal Cast

Who do you want to play the characters in your script?
For me it would be:

Tom: Anton Yelchin
Clark: Donald Glover
Naomi: Emma Stone
Danny: Tom Hardy
Principal Evans: Kyle McLachlan
The Gooch: Clark Duke

Post yours!

Funny Lines You're Particularly Proud Of

Just thought it might be nice to share funny lines and characterizations and sight gags and whatnot. (The more random, the better!)

I'm writing a quasi-Vicotrian comedic murder mystery, and I just had three of my characters start an impromptu discussion about, and I quote, "coffee enemas in foreign parts."

I think there's something wrong with me, and it would be nice to know that there something wrong with other people too...

You sense of humor

Ever feel like nobody gets your sense of humor? That's your too absurd and out there and people will just think you're stupid? That's my biggest fear. It's so bad that I even hesitate on writing because of it.

Dark Comedy

Who else is writing a black comedy script? I'm talking scripts like Withnail & I, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, or Hot Fuzz, where things get over-the-top in terms of darker themes being used for funny purposes. I'm writing a script about a pair of high schoolers who decide to play detectives but get wound up in a vast conspiracy of crime in their small town. There's going to be a ton of almost slapstick-like violence and very dark themes, but with a lot of levity so it's less Scorcese and more Edgar Wright.

Stuck between two plots

I've got a problem, Frenziers. I've participated in NaNo twice and Screnzy once, and for the first time, I don't have one clear story that I feel an urge to write. I have two.

For a while, I've been wanting to write a comedy called Five Misdemeanors. It's semi-autobiographical in nature, and close to my heart. A coming of age tale, with a few laughs to go with my reflections on growing up socially isolated. I've always viewed it as a feature length film, and if I decide to get it produced, I want it done right.
