FADE IN
INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
A living room with well used furniture, but nice. Most of the furniture is facing a LARGE SCREEN TV. On the floor in front of the TV are two backpacks. The TV is off.
At one side of the room, near the front door are the steps to the upstairs. The wall is covered with framed pictures of the family in various activities.
The sound of footsteps coming down the stairs.
MONIQUE (Os)
You need to get a move on. We're a little behind schedule right now. I don't want anyone to be late.
AMELIA (0s)
I'm almost ready.
MONIQUE LESSERMANN comes down the steps as she rummaging through her purse. She in her late thirties, still looking like the popular cheerleader she was in high school. She reaches the bottom of the stairs and looks back up.
MONIQUE
I thought someone was following me.
AMELIA (0S)
Dad's still in the bathroom. Been in there for a long time and I need to brush my teeth.
MONIQUE
Tell him to hurry up.
AMELIA (0S)
(shouting)
Hurry up, Dad.
Monique pulls out her wallet, pulls out a few bills and stuffs the wallet back into her purse.
Boris (OS)
Where's my bookbag?
MONIQUE
Where we always have it in the morning.
AMELIA (0S)
Dad's out, be there down as soon as I can.
Door slams upstairs.
BORIS LESSERMANN comes quickly down the stairs. He's 15, tall, and thin.
BORIS
Dad was zoned out again. Amelia should have banged on the door sooner.
Monique smiles and shakes her head. Nothing new.
HARVEY LESSERMANN comes down the stairs. He's in his late thirties thin yet sturdy, a runner's body. His hair is still wet and combed, but his shirt is buttoned unevenly.
Harvey
I'm about ready to go. Breakfast ready?
Monique gives him a kiss and starts rebuttoning his shirt.
MONIQUE
I had it ready fifteen minutes ago. I knew we were going to be late so we're having egg sandwiches, to go.
HARVEY
(grins)
You are always prepared. What would we do without you?
MONIQUE
Let's hope we never have to find out.
AMELIA LESSERMANN comes down the stairs and rushes past the others as she's combing her wet hair. She's 18, long hair, shapely, looks like the younger version of her cheerleader mom. She's even wearing her own CHEERLEADING LETTER SWEATER.
AMELIA
I don't have time for breakfast. I'm supposed to meet Callie before school.
Amelia hurries to pick up her backpack from in front of the TV. Grabs it, put it over one shoulder and her purse over the other.
AMELIA
I wouldn't have been late if Dad hadn't have been so long in the bathroom.
(rolls eyes at her father)
Bye, all
Amelia waves as she hurries out the front door.
HARVEY
I wasn't all that long.
BORIS
Twenty minutes, dad. I know because I had to hurry down to the downstairs bathroom.
Boris get's his backpack and disappears into the kitchen.
HARVEY
(puzzled)
That long?
Monique leads him to the kitchen
Monique grabs a baggied sandwich from the table and puts it in his hand.
MONIQUE
You seem to have everything.
(looks him over)
Let's go.
Monique and Harvey walk arm in arm to the cars. One is a several year old minivan with hardly a mark on it. the other is a sedan a few years older with a few dents and scratches from minor incidents over the years.
MONIQUE
You going to be okay to drive today, or should you take the bus?
HARVEY
(seems to ponder)
I'll be okay to drive.
Harvey goes to sedan and gets in.
Monique watches as Harvy's car pulls out and drives away. Only then does she let herself relax.
Harvey turns on the radio as he turns a corner with the other hand, eyes on the road.
ANNOUNCER (VO)
(on radio)
...another shooting on the west side last night. The third shooting this week in the area. Officials are concerned that this may be related...
Harvey pushes a button and the radio plays music.
HARVEY
they should provide more police protection there if they think there's a problem.
(shakes head)
I would be able to keep an eye on things...
DAYDREAM - HARVEY'S DAYDREAM AS HERO
Harvey is dressed in a SECURTY UNIFORM as he walks along a neighborhood street. A swagger and pride in his demeanor. He walks along the street. He is looking over hedges, looking in parked cars.
There is a scream and Harvey runs in the direction of a house. A couple of TEEN BOYS are shoving around a YOUNG LADY, causing her to spill her bags of GROCERIES.
Harvey fearlessly approaches the boys and demands they stop. They laugh. Harvey grabs them both by the collar, knocks their heads together effortlessly, and lets them fall to the ground.
The lady beams her admiration and gives Harvey a kiss on the cheek.
SIRENS signal the arrival of policemen, who haul off the boys.
A CAR HORN sounds and arms reach out of open car windows to wave at Harvey.
BACK TO PRESENT DAY
INT. CAR - DAY
Harvey looks around him. Seems puzzled at where he is. His confident posture changes to sagging shoulders. He looks and sees that he his stopped at a GREEN LIGHT, and CAR HORNS are sounding around him.
Harvey starts forward just as the TRAFFIC LIGHT changes. He stops in the middle of the intersection, barely avoiding another vehicle.
Harvey sinks lower in his seat, wanting to be anyplace but where he is.
