Annie's house

Annie and Nick are sleeping in her bed. Her cat sleeps curled up on their feet. The room is dark except for the glow of the muted TV. The alarm clock on her nightstand says 3:13. A knock comes from the front door and they stir. A few seconds pass before there is another knock. Her eyes open and she stares at the clock, her face blank. There is another knock, this one louder. The cat looks up towards the small living room and Nick rolls over. He is shirtless and his hair is disheveled.

nick

(murmuring)

Annie? Honey? I think someone's at the door.

annie

(murmuring)

Sh. No, there isn't. Go back to sleep.

Nick looks at her, clearly confused, but she just stares at the clock. There is another knock, louder again, and the cat jumps down, going towards the door. Nick sits up, but she grabs his arm before he can get out of bed.

annie

(murmuring)

Nick, don't. There's no one there.

nick

Annie...

annie

(hissing)

Shut up!

The knocking becomes louder, shaking the door and making the cat run for cover. He looks at her, his face pale.

nick

Annie, who is it?

annie

I said shut up!

nick

Is it Lance?

annie

He'll hear you.

Nick gets up and stares at her. Knocking continues.

nick

What do we do?

annie

Shut the hell up!

She sits up and starts rocking back and forth.

nick

Call the police.

annie

No! Just give me the phone.

Nick hands her the phone and she stares down at it. The knocking gets even louder. It is now a pounding, the door jumping on its hinges with every strike. Nick goes to the window and peeks out the blinds into the darkness.

annie

(whispers)

I don't know what to do...

nick

I don't see him...

annie

That's because he's at the front door... Get away from the window!

Nick looks around the room frantically, as if he's looking for either a weapon or escape route. The knocking is even louder. Annie gets out of bed, phone in hand.

nick

Call the police Annie, please. Jesus Christ, call the cops!

Annie stares at the phone in her hand, trembling.

Annie

I can't... I don't... I mean...

Nick grabs the phone out of her hand and dials before handing it back. A few seconds pass and Annie stares at the door, a tear sliding down her cheek.

operator

(voice)

Annie

The scene fades out, rolling opening credits.
