An Excerpt from Maybe... Not

Conner starts to head for the door, but David runs up and catches her waist.

DAVID
Why must you always run away?

CONNER (thrusting David’s hands from her waist and turning to face him)
Why must you always follow me?

DAVID
Touche.

CONNER
What kind of tests?

DAVID
Oh, good. I knew you’d finally give in. You always do.

CONNER
I do not!

DAVID
You do, but let’s not get into that now. I’d like to start out with trust, because it’s easy. You know the trust exercise, right?

CONNER
Of course. But I’m not doing it with you.

DAVID
Of course you are. Come here.

David offers his arms to her. She looks at his arms, then his face, and then back again.

CONNER (exasperated)
Fine.

DAVID
Okay. Close your eyes. I will catch you.

They position themselves into the trust position. Conner closes her eyes and falls backwards. Just like he promised, David’s arms are there to catch her. He pulls her back to her face, and then around to face him again. Their faces end up inches away from each other. David grins at her. Conner looks as if she is undecided as to how she should feel.

DAVID
Good. We’re making progress.
