An Excerpt from Project November (working title)

Martin reaches into his hoodie and pulls out a digital voice recorder and presses the record button.
MARTIN (INTO THE VOICE RECORDER)
Team three first floor library.
Martin walks over to the reading area in front of the fireplace. He places the digital recorder down on the small table and the EMF detector next to it. The rest of the team joins him there.
MARTIN
All right guys, we are going to try an electronic voice phenomena session. We are going to attempt to make contact. We’ll begin with some simple questions and requests…

TOM
Requests?

MARTIN
Yes, we seek verification of it’s existence by asking for tapping or knocking, that sort of thing and if we don’t get anything we will become increasingly antagonistic towards the entity.

MARY
Antagonistic?

MARTHA
Yes. We find that if a spirit does not want to play ball then we can sometimes goad them into it.

TOM
No kidding, really?

MARTIN
Yes.

TOM
If these things exist is it a good idea to piss them off?

MARTHA
We are just trying to establish contact; a positive or negative response to stimuli.

TOM
And in order for that to happen we have to find an entity first, right?

MARTIN
I don’t think that will be an issue.
All members of the team look toward Martin. He glances up from the EMF meter that sits on the table. A green light is flickering.
TOM
Why’s that?

MARTIN
My electro magnetic field detector is reading a 5.0.

MARY
What?
Mary sweeps the infrared thermo detector towards the devices on the table.
MARY
I’ve got nothing…

MARTHA
THERE!
Martha points towards a shadowy isle of books.
MARTHA (CONT.)
There is something there moving in the shadows.
Mary whips around the infrared thermo scanner to isle where Martha had seen the movement.
TOM
There’s nothing there but old books.

MARY
…Oh my God… We’ve got something on the monitor.
Mary watches the screen and sees a red and orange human like mass. The form moves towards the team.
MARY (CONT.)
It’s coming closer!
She looks up from the screen and sees nothing but empty space.
Martin steps forward.
MARTIN
We mean you no harm. Don’t be frightened by all of the lights that we have here. We just want to talk.

MARTHA (WHISPERING INTO HER EARBUD)
Monty, please tell me you’re getting this.

MONTY (V.O. ON THE MICROPHONE)
Yes.

MARTIN
If you can hear us give us a sign. Tap on this table.
The Team parts giving whatever it is a clear path towards the table that Martin gestured to. Mary’s eyes don’t move from the infrared view screen.
MARY
It’s not moving.
Tom swings his flashlight beam chest high, horizontally around the room.
TOM
There is nothing there. It’s just an empty room.

MARY
Here it comes.
KNOCK! The members of Team Three are briefly startled by the clarity of the sound. The table shakes briefly jogging the electronic devices sitting there.
MARTIN
Who are you? Are you one of the Headley’s?
All ambient sound disappears in the library. It is quiet on top of quiet. A raspy whispering voice cuts the silence.
ENTITY
…You don’t…
There is a pause.
MARTIN
You don’t what?

ENTITY (V.O.)
…You don’t… belong here…

MARTIN
Why is that?

MARTHA
Yes – perhaps it is you who needs to move on. Perhaps you don’t belong here anymore.
Mary holds the infrared scanner in trembling hands as she watches the humanoid form drift towards Martha’s position.
MARY
Martha… it’s moving to you.
Martha stands her ground, her eyes looking around the area as if she were addressing someone in the flesh.
ENTITY (V.O)
…Gen…

MARTHA
What?

MARY
It’s moving again!
Mary watches the heat signature.
MARY (CONT. – URGENT WHISPER)
Tom – it’s coming to you.

ENTITY (V.O.)
…Get… Gen…
Tom looks at the other members of Team Three. They all have the same look of awe on their faces.
TOM
I don’t understand.

ENTITY (V.O.)
…Thomas.
Shock and horror register on Tom’s face. He shoots a look at Mary who appears to be incredibly frightened.
TOM
Who are you?

ENTITY (V.O.)
…Dad… Thomas… I’m Dad…
Tom’s flashlight goes out, drained of all its energy.
TOM
What? WHAT!

Mary watches the entity dissolve through the view screen of the infrared thermo scanner. She is shivering.
Martha shakes her head in disbelief and Martin moves closer to Tom.
MARTIN
Are you all right, Tom?
Mary rushes to Tom’s side.
TOM
This – whatever this is, ends right now.
Tom’s teeth are clenched and there is a line made by a tear on his cheek. He looks to Mary who is quietly sobbing by his side.
TOM (CONT.)
I’m done. What kind of a joke is this your playing at?

MARTIN
This was no joke, Tom.
Martha shakes her head still amazed at the event that she was a part of.
MARTIN (CONT.)
I have never seen anything like what we just witnessed in all the years that we have been investigating. I agree with you; we are most certainly done here. [to Martha] Martha, make the call.
Martha puts her hand to her earbud to address all the teams of investigators.
MARTHA
All teams. All teams. Report back to command center. We’re done here.
