VERONICA
I think you’re stuck with me this time, Wallace.
WALLACE
Good. In that case, welcome back to Neptune.
Veronica smirks.
VERONICA
Yeah. Thanks. So, catch me up on the news. What’s going on with everyone these days?
Wallace relaxes back into his chair, and the conflict in the air between the two dissipates.
WALLACE
Well, Mac has her own business. She mostly helps rich guys fix their computers, but she does some company computer installations and a bunch of stuff she told me about but I didn’t really understand.
VERONICA
Wow! Her own business? That’s amazing.
WALLACE
Yeah… Hm, who else? Piz left for New York before junior year. Word is he transferred to a school up there and he’s some kind of Top 40 radio DJ now.
Veronica winces.
VERONICA
Top 40? Ouch.
WALLACE
Right? Oh! Dick is getting married!
VERONICA
Dick? Married? Again? Next you’ll be telling me Weevil joined the priesthood. Who’s the lucky lady?
WALLACE
I don’t really know her, but apparently she’s from money. Guess Dick had to marry up since his dad’s business tanked.
VERONICA
Yeah. What good is Dick without money? So when is the blessed event?
WALLACE
Saturday, I think. It’s at the Kane estate. Hey, that’s another reason why this whole ‘vacation’ thing with my mom is fishy.
VERONICA
What’s that you say? Fishy ?
WALLACE
Yeah, see, the office manager at my mom’s office told me she’d been working at the Kane estate for the few days before she went missing. Why would she be working at the estate? She’s always worked in the main office. It’s just weird.
Veronica raises an eyebrow and the look in her eyes makes Wallace sit up in his chair.
VERONICA
Are you thinking what I’m thinking, Mr. Fennel?
WALLACE
That depends. Are you thinking we’re going to be crashing a wedding on Saturday?
Veronica raises her milkshake in a toast.
VERONICA
To the bride and groom!
